Question How do I calculate rental prices for my equipment?

Hi,

In most cases I use a fairly a small setup in order to record classical music however we get lately also crossover music (mix between pop and classical) i.e. multi channel recording projects which requires more microphones, preamps and converters etc etc.
Which also results in more shipping costs, insurance, more post production etc etc.

Now how do I calculate rental prices / labour to my client?

Gaston

The norm is 2% of the retail cost per day (10 hrs.) for gear rental.

Thanks for the tip, I spoke yesterday to a colleague and he told me that in the "good" old days it was 3% however in Germany it is now down to approx 1.5%.

Cheers,

Gaston

Talking

In the good ol' days it was 5% per day 10% per week.

I would do 2.5% per day now I think - you need to think about wear and tear, and replacement costs and still making a profit from the hire.

Something with a long life can go out cheaper than something with a short life that needs to be replaced every year or two.

When I started in film/video audio the rental norm was 1% of value, with certain minimums and deals made for big packages. That was 35 yrs ago. We now look on those times as good times....

It also depends a little on the durability of the gear in question.
For a mic preamp or other piece of rugged hardware we normally use the 2.5-3% per day. For mics and other fragile things we typically use 3-3.5% of value per day.
Also, remember that anybody renting from you should be supplying you with an insurance binder listing you as the payee for the full retail price of all gear, cases and accessories.

All the best,
-mark
