| i'm currently trying to get funding and grants to go on location through Africa with a mobile recording setup. any suggestions on a lightweight professional mobile rig? i have a powerbook and a motu traveler and a couple nice preamps, but to be even more portable i was thinking of going for a nice DAT or HARD DISK Recorder and a couple nice microphones. any suggestions on DAT and/or HARD DISK recorders? (I suppose the benefit of DAT is you don;t need a computer to upload your flash cards, but is DAT becoming out-dated?). Also, any suggestions on Microphones to go with these units? thanx much.. brian |

| Definitely Flash. Nothing else works except good old auntie Nagra. Nagra probably is the most tolerant to extreme temperatures. But Auntie Nagra is heavy. Fostex FR-2 or Tascam HD-P2. I guess the Fostex is a little better as to preamps and user-friendliness. Fostex field recorders have that big solid red switch for one-finger rec/pause whereas Tascam has normal buttons (which I remember from the DA-P1 to not always realize they've been pressed. Don't like the DA-P1 for more reasons...). Mics: I wouldn't use CMC6 (or CMC5 if your phantom power is reliable), but rather the small "compact mics" of the CCM (not CMC!) series. So either a pair of CCM41 or a CCM41 and a CCM8 for MS - then of course the recorder needs a matrix. Don't forget energy. AA cell operated recorders probably are best, because if there are any batteries to be found in the bush it's probably AA. And they are light and small, so you can carry some backup sets. And take A LOT of flash cards with you.
