[Radio journalism] NAGRA ARES-P and other

hi there,

im fresh kill around here, a radio reporter and documentary maker with a big interest in sound.

Ive been looking of some way out of the minidisc ghetto
for radio reporting jobs for some time now, thinking that
i might get an mBox and an iBook (or something like that)
and make life sound better.

then just this weekend i met a BBC chap (at the Big Chill, as
it happens) who had a dinky looking thing that turned out to
be a NAGRA ARES-P. it seemed ideal for the job. Once touch
recording, instant sound files, all-of-a-piece mic etc. etc.

When i got home and researched a bit, i discoverd that the unit
has two boo-boos from my POV:

1) it records on removable media cards (which max out at around
500MB, i think...)

2) it records in compressed format (MPEG summit...)

This forum then seemed like an ideal place to ask...does anyone know of a tool that does not have these disadvantages but is sort of all-in-one jobby that is good for mobile work?

thanks in advance to all

The Marantz PMD670 records .wav but only support cardflash cards (like the 1Gb IBM microdrive). The older PMD690 do PCCards but are much more expensive.

Both PMD:s record only 16-bit. As do the iRiver handheld device. I thing there is a model of Creative Nomad MP3 product that accept 16-bit digital in to .wav.

The PMD:s have built-in mic-pre:s which are o.k. iRiver and Nomad have digital in.

My favourite so far is the Sony TCD-D10 Pro-II DAT recorder which comes with a remote control in the form of a pistol grip handle for your mic. The gotcha with that machine is that it has no phantom-power for the mic(s).

I am currently getting the Core-Sound PDAudio system as an experiment. It is 24-bit cardflash card (SPDIF input) and works with a Compaq iPaq handheld computer up to 96khz sampling. I have a dual pccard jacket on the iPaq that has a 5Gb disk in one slot and the PDAudio in the other. The jacket also has 2000 mAH extra battery power.

It is only just shipping and not available as a complete ready-to-use package yet (complete with iPaq etc.) and digital in means you need an external micpre+A/D. Like a Lunatec v3, Mini-Me or the new Mic2496 from Core-Sound.

Call me crazy, but what's wrong with small-format removable media I.E Flash?
