Talking Pro Tools has AI ... horror story

hi steve,

here is another horror story from the world or remotes ..

last night working a job that will be nameless ... rental PT rig, we recorded the soundcheck ... the show and then the interviews

counting the starts and stops (3) ... it is TV after all ... we rolled for the Interview and PT decides (AI artificial intelligence) that it will go into record but will not take any input signals ... we look over at the backup deck (X48 tascam) and it is running fine ... restart PT and it all comes back ... look over at the X48 and it has an Error on the screen - record buffer full - no rhyme or reason for any of this ... we had hardly recorded more than about 2 hours total ...

cheers

john

update ...

day two and all runs fine with PT as long as we do not stop it in between shows and interviews .. so yesterday we had to let pro tools run for 4 hours from soundcheck start through the show and then the interview ...

i will keep updated as we have two more days later this week ..

cheers

john

That's pretty unusual. I record for TV quite a bit - as you say, dropping in and out of record all the time - locked to timecode, both with two X-48s and two Nuendo rigs, and never had problems quite like that. I don't use PT, but always assumed it'd be at least as solid as Nuendo.

Although all these systems tend to have, shall we say, "characteristics" that you quickly learn to work around.

Are you running OS 1.2 in the X48? It's been very stable for me so far.

I feel for you - discovering that both the main and the safety recorders have died on you at the same time is the worst feeling. It's happened to me once, but not with this hardware.

Strange stuff for sure.

Depending on how much downtime there is in between the breaks, we never stop the recorders.

And, if we were running a (let us say 48 channel) PT rig, we would also have two X48s running as well. one locked to picture one free wheeling, just to be covered.

Is your equipment locked to the TV signal (black burst). We did a show where the black burst coming to us was so undependable we had to unsync our recorders as they would stop on their own from loss of good sync. The EIC (engineer in charge) of the TV remote crew was telling us that we should have been getting the same quality of black burst he was using for syncing up the TV cameras but it was not a good quality signal. Maybe a bad DA or maybe some cable problems>>>>. Best of luck!

I've been in that (poor quality black burst) situation more times than I want to accept.
