Question Howard Shore and "The Hobbit"

Hey guys,

I figured this would be a good place to post something of this nature, so forgive me if I'm mistaken.

My sister is a musician/composer and aspiring film composer interested in collaborating/working/learning from Howard Shore in some way in relation to Peter Jackson's upcoming film "The Hobbit".

She's in a vocal/experimental duo called kyü (who you can listen to at kyu | Free Music, Tour Dates, Photos, Videos) who have made great progress in the Australian music scene.

I was wondering if any of you slutz would know how she could get into contact with Howard Shore or someone who could help her out in this situation, seeing as I assume many of you are working in the higher-end studios in New York, LA or London, and we don't have all that much in that field here in Sydney.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers.

good luck with that ooloolloo - my son has a doctorate in music composition, and has been banging on that door for a long time already. and he already has nice connections in LA from his years at USC. it is a tight field, and commissions are largely given "within the family". networking is key, and to break into the field will likely require hiring on to do sub arrangements for a known composer for a while until you get yourname known somehow. my son is currently working on a score for a new film, "in this wood" by mist and nimbus pictures - an enormous amount of work with perhaps no payoff, but we'll see:

OTOH, there are LOTS of aspiring film makers out there itching for someone to write scores for their work - of course they have no money to pay, and no promise of any notice by the industry - but it is a place to start and get some experience. there are always lots of ads in NYC postings for spec composers.
