DIY ONNO mic stand with carbon fiber Absolutely no post processing. Besides, 4060 are more quiet than 4061, which most people prefer for some strange reason.

4006 TL - cleaner MK2s - a little bit warmer. The difference is subtle, but I think I'd start with 4006 on Steinway and MK2s on Yamaha; DPA for Mozart's piano concerto in E-flat major KV365 and Schoeps for the d-minor KV 466. Given all others equal. Both are great, with both you can make amazing records. For me the TL version of 4006 is better than it's transformer counterpart, feels less harsh, with nicer top end. |

yesterday i have listened a demo cd of earthworks where they compare various recordings with mics at the same distance from the source. no eq or effects applied. i have listened to the piano recorded at high, middle and near distance from the source. they compared eathworks, dpa, akg and audix. i think audix is a spectacular mic. probably the most balanced among the mics i have listened and overall with an air around it very very sweet. in this occasion it was the first time i listend to DPA. i can say it is the only mic i have listed that can open as a knife a sound and see what there is inside. it is a sound very complex, that i think a lot of people could not love. but avoiding phylosopical consideration and self taste, i could say, about the high end serie (4011), that technically it is the more advanced capsule i have listened. it would be good to see also schoeps and sennheiser...i hope soon make a comparison by myself with these three giants. the other mics listened were less intesting for me. about the models: audix scx25 akg c414 dpa 4011 dpa 4061 (not detailed as 4011) earthworks pianomic (listened with mytek converters and geithain monitors) Alessandro. |

Wow! This sample is simply awesome! But I'm looking for my MAIN pair of mics. Do you think that a pair of DPA 4060s will do the job? Thanks!

I am not in the same league as Petrus. Maybe that will allay your fears. ;o) Anyway, here is a track from the Mendelssohn Elijah recorded with DPA 4061's. I was using the hillbilly version of the Petrus carbon fiber mic stand and the Onno array, ~40 cm. The grids are removed to eliminate the little mid-high frequency bump. I have some rock tracks, too. I like the little DPA's a lot. You can find the Elijah track here: Question re choosing lavalier mics

i just posted this video sample for critique in a new thread, but it may give you another idea of the miniature DPA omnis sound like. it is a flute solo recorded with a spaced pair of DPA 4090s (very similar to the 4060s but housed in a mic body for stand mounting).

...and the new DPA microphones based on their miniature microphones, using two diaphragms and better preamp at least resulting in better noise-figures. Could be a new interesting contender on the market, for those relatively tight budgets. But of course we don't how they sound yet, and as far as I can see, no charts has been published yet [they may not be as impressive off axis as the 4060]. Here's a link to the specifications of the omni compact version 2006C: DPA Microphones :: Products :: Mads

Thread Starter | Hi! I’ve almost decided to go for a matched pair of Schoeps CMC64, but I recently hear some samples of Gefells M20. Are they comparable or fine contenders to be my first professional pair of mics? Thanks! |
