Exclamation What is a "Gearslutz Fact?"

What is a "Gearslutz Fact?"

I am increasingly concerned about what I term a "Gearslutz Fact."

What is that, pray tell?

A "Gearslutz fact" is an opinion or myth masquerading as settled consensus.

So now I will take to labeling these "GS facts" as I run across the pronouncers who attempt to foist them on us.

Will you join me in this campaign?

Well, you can point fingers or get into debates.... Or you can just ignore those definitive statements and simply contribute your own opinions. Those of us with an adult maturity level see things for what they are and know that the strong opinions of self important members are... of limited value. <shrug>

It's unfortunate that young musicians may get misinformation but they eventually (through personal experience) come to understand that there are no rules in music. Common practices at best and even then the truly creative ones will learn that breaking common practice is a fast track to originality.

Well there are several kinds:

A statement that is just incorrect and passed off as fact.
A statement that is opinion and passed off as fact.
A statement that is based on sound judgement but is not provable.
"" on physics but not perception
"" on perception but not science
''' the ramblings of a Mac user
etc.

Can't stop them all, just have to put up with most.

Nope, you didn't get me NOrse. That's because there IS consensus of excellence on that one! (Besides--my quoted mantra was always offered (intended) as over the top comedy relief.)

thankyasomuch.

p.s.--all I'm saying is that I will use the term "gearslutz fact" to occasionally label promulgated myths and "wisdom" offered by a gs mope.

Tube equipment sounds at least 20°C warmer than its solid state equivalent.

When we run across these gems in our GS readings, will we be calling out the GS mope who has posted a "Gearslutz Fact?"

I hope so. . .

Any answer/comment that ends with the infuriating word: "Done."

Example:
Q. What is the best process for mastering classical?

A. Get the best recording you can and burn it to a CD. Done.

or

Quote:

Done.

Classic vintage gear can never be improved by the original company, even with advances in audio technology. If it was classic gear in the 50 or 60's it can never possibly be improved upon in the present time.

if your preamp does not say neve, it is suck.
if your mics are not DPA, schoeps, sennheiser or neumann, they are suck.
if you use a laptop on location, you are braindead.
if you do not have dedicated converters, your signal chain is suck.
if you apply compression to classical recordings, your tracks are suck.
if your remote kit cost less than your house, you are suck.

If only for a moment, until I manage to-- excuse me, my lawyer whispering in my ear again... hmmm... okay, gotcha.

No further comment, press conference over.

Gearslutz Facts:

No matter what you own, you cannot make decent music with it unless you spend thousands more because what you own is junk.

No matter what your budget is for new gear, you should spend more to get something really good.

Everything cheap sucks.

Six or seven people on this forum know everything. Your opinion sucks.

Hardware compressors need to be 'high end' to add something useful to the party, or else might as well stick with plugs. Gearslutz fact.

The less mainstream the company, the better the sound.
Same company goes mainstream, the sound immediately sucks.
