Talking RADIO SHOW HOST NEEDS A BETTER MIC.

This is kind of a fun situation......I hope that a fellow GS around Rohnert Park in Sonoma County CA can help out.
Here's the deal-
I am selling a couple things on ebay, so I get a question about the DBX 160a that I am selling. It turns out that the host interested in this is named DR. Dave, and he has a podcast radio show called Shrink Rap Radio..a Podcast featuring talk and interviews with psychologists.

http://www.shrinkrapradio.com/ check it out, it's very cool!

Anyway, he is new to pro audio, and is looking to improve his sound. After further emails with him, I came to find out that he is using a Samson mic, with an Alesis mixer, in an untreated room. I recommended that he could improve the quality of his vocal sound from good to great, by finding a better mic that works well with his voice, and a decent mic pre to compliment it.
Is there any GS in the Sonoma County area who would enjoy helping this Dr. Dave out? I told him to avoid Guitar center, and that maybe a cool GS with a variety of mics and mic pre's would invite him over for an hour or 2 to audition a few different options.
Here was his reply when I suggested this.

"Yes, that would be great if you would post that announcement on
Gearslutz.com. I live in Rohnert Park which is in Sonoma County.
People in the area will know where that is. Thanks for your offer."

I will send him a link to this post, I hope a local GS can help him out.
Thanks everyone!!!!!

Nobody around Senoma?
Come on dudes, you could be the guy who helps out the next Rush Limbaugh or Howard Stern here...
The guy wants to audition a few different mics and preamps for his new show.
http://www.shrinkrapradio.com/ check it out, it's very cool!
Thanks Brothas!

I'm not from there, but can recommend he pick up a RE20/RE27, either that or an SM7. They're "industry standard" radio mic's.

there's also the new Neumann broadcast mic's. They're dynamics

RE20 is probably the most used on air announcment/talent broadcast mic. You can sound like everyone else when you use one, which is the goal sometimes. They are also AWESOME off axis, which is why they got so popular. If you talent moves a lot or has poor mic tehnique, this is your answer. RE 15/16, RE10/11 same thing but less bass.

Omni's are nice for interviews when you must hand hold it and have all kinds of people talking, you still see EV 635A omni on TV and the RE50 (less handing noise).

RE27 [nydym RE20] is nice because its hotter plus has more top end. But still sounds like a 20....

The new Heil mics (PR30 and PR40) are winning in many broacast apps right now inclduing podcasting. We have Leo Laporte the big podcaster from So Cal with a computer show on KFI using them now for his podcasts.....

Sennheiser shotguns are nice for ads....

Condensers can get you in trouble due to moisture, so you need moisture barriers built in or they short on you...broadcast app is notoriously hard on mics. That being said we have some proto Soundelux condenser mics on air in Seattle doing well.

Thanks for getting some action on this thread guys!
I sent Dr. Dave a link to view these replies.
Is there a preamp that would work particularly well with the Electro Voice RE20 ?
I am going to take a tour of the Shure microphone facility in Niles Il. next week....I will ask about pre amp matches for the SM7
Thanks Brothas!!

Check out the Heil PR-30 or PR 40. I've been checking them out on instruments the last few weeks and I'm liking them a lot. If I'm not mistaken, they were designed for broadcast voice applications. Heil mics

Cheers,
John

PS -- I'm sure there are a variety of pre's that will fit the bill...

Have not used the Heil mics, but have great experience using RE-20, RE-27, Sennheisser 421 and 441, and Shure SM-7s for broadcast work. These are workhorses with great sound and are worth the price. For a mic pre he can go in the $100-300 and go up several steps from the Alesis mixer....heck, a used $100 ART Tube MP or Aphex 107 Tubessence are both big steps up and VERY affordable.

Hope this helps, sorry I'm not in the area to loan some stuff out but you should be able to find a Sam Ash or Guitar Center in the area in which to demo options if no Slutz are nearby.

Sennheiser 421 or Shure SM-7 - RE-20s suck; RE-27s suck worse.

Hi Rand,
I don't know if they offer public tours...The tour that I am taking is private with a couple of designers that I work with.
I will ask.
Thanks!

Another vote for the SM7. It gives presence to where you most DJs want it, and cuts thru most material nicely without being overly abrasive.

You're saying he's recording in an untreated room. Well, my suggesion is he treat the room before he buys new gear. Or do all three of them. The room's way more important to the sound than changing from Samson/Alesis to EV/whatever...

Tell him to treat his room a little, too.

But broadcasting room treatment is easy... well, it could be out of the norm, but if you're only talking about simple talk show or spokesperson type work, if it's really just dio/monologue and music, you can just close in a small space with some panels or something and a bunch of foam, right?

That's a good idea. Cost effective too. You don't need a lot of space to perform.
