Cool Recording in a club...

I don't know who these people are who say there's no good music these days, they need to get down to Valentines in Albany some Friday night, right there on New Scotland Avenue... quaint, charming, divey little club...

And ideal for minimalist micing: I'm talking a CAD M-179 and two Earthworks QTC 30's. Please note: These are not cheap Chinese mics and I don't risk being banned for posting this thread-- (inside joke, folks-- you wouldn't believe me if I toldja.)

Get a few direct outs from the trusty Allen & Heath 16 channel Mixwizard (I would swear there's a law that every club must install these and only these!) And have four acts on the bill running the gamut from fiery intensity to laidback spacewalk... and brother you be stylin'...

Hi Joel.

I'm about to use a similar setup in two weeks: Room mics plus direct outs/groups from the live-desk.

Couple of questions:

You had 1 Mono omni over the stage and the earthworks as a spaced pair back in the room?
What signals did you take as direct outs from the mixer?
Your recording has a big amount of room tone - where were the omnis set up?

I'm planning to use an omni over the stage and spaced cardiodids near the stage picking up the PA and room ambience. Whatever is missing from these mics, I plan on getting from the console.

Very nice tone from the recordings - thanks for inspiration and a heads up for my planned setup!

How do you fix a terrible snare sound?
The answer is, a hit single. (Thanks, Trina)

On the intro of Into March it sounds like a little girl talking, but, once she starts to sing the impression changes a bit. Nicely done.

I take it they don't serve food at Valentines or that you have discovered the ultimate "Plates and Glasses NR plug-in"? My club recordings to date have that "recorded next to the dishwasher" ambiance.

Nice job tho - makes me want to order a drink and catch the rest of the set. And no cover! thumbsup

All the food there is liquid... although in a moment of starvation I helped myself to the little caddy that holds the lime slices.

Right, the CAD was over the stage, a foot from the singers' heads. (I was warned: "Oh no! You'll get the monitors!" But I have alot of faith in the monitors... and what the people onstage are actually hearing, yeah, that can't be a bad thing. One would hope...?) The Earthworks were about eight feet back, over the dance floor, and eight feet apart or so.

This was all done with my super-compact 8-channel remote rig, so with those three mics, I had five tracks to spare... from the mixer I got (direct out) the vocal mics, instrument DI's, at one point a guy was playing his preprogrammed synth beds... the groups were small enough that five channels covered pretty much whatever was being PA'd.

I would be remiss in not mentioning the awesome job that Kristen Parslow and her group SwordPaw do to promote these shows... they really search far and wide to bring you powerful, positive, uplifting performers.
