Talking Prince on Saturday Night Live

I'm kicking myself for not seeing Prince on the Musicology tour last year. After seeing Prince perform on Saturday Night Live this weekend, it's clear that he is still the man.

The 2nd song didn't do much for me, but that first tune was a total barnburner. The sound was great as well. Can't wait for the new album....

Did anyone else catch the SNL performance?

I thought the same thing. Amazing first tune, totally limp second tune.

Prince is one of the only good things about being from Minneapolis.

I love Prince. That is putting it mildly.

there was a distinctly hendrix inspired vibe on that first one and price really cut loose....but was also very tight with the band.

thumbs up!!

second tune was totally generic.

I only saw 1 song, and it was utter crap. I was never a Price fan but I always respected what he did. This was just boring session dude funk. Nothing exciting or original. And who was the girl singing? Some "prodigy"???? I think not. SNL has really had a bad run with artists in my opinion....They need to step things up.

I thought the song was a little lame but his guitar playing is CRAZY! He's mad talented.

Yeah -- I was thinking "modern Hendrix" as well.

The only performance I've seen that compares to this was Prince's smokin' rendition of "Housequake" on the "Sign O' The Times" video from 1991. If you haven't seen that concert video, find it -- it's amazing.

The 2nd song was indeed boring. Maybe Prince is trying to launch another prodigy on his label or something (Vanity part II? Apollonia deux?)

Don't render final judgement until you see footage of the first song -- it was a staggering performance.

some people don't even know he plays guitar!

his (already) legendary rock and roll hall of fame performance:

Total Hendrix tribute. And he's a god enough guitarist to pull it off.

prince

prince schmince!

he get's way too much slack. he's an egomaniac, pushes his "people" around...treats folks in general pretty crappily... makes ridiculous demands of his employees, like "don't look at me"... publicizes his own religous pinball game of a life and demands to be referred to as an unpronouncable "symbol".

and he puts out albums filled with stuff as good as that 2nd song on snl.
if anyone else did that he/she'd be pelted with rotten tomatoes.

but he is wicked talented. too bad that he wastes most of it.

i've never worked for him, live in mpls... and am just tired of his schtick.

and i really like saying prince schmince!http://gearslutz.com/board/newreply....te=1&p=585503#

Watched it live on Saturday night as well. I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd see it mentioned here.

A great performance, in my opinion.

As for his ego and/or anything else about him, I dont care. I never met the man and I enjoy his music at times.

I don't know him personally, so I can't say. But everytime I've seen him interviewed, or listen to him talk about stuff, I am very impressed with his easy going manner and his take on things. I haven't found that to be the case with very many celebrities.

And he does play a very mean guitar.

4 licks at best!

Mentionning Hendrix and Prince in the same sentence as Gtr player is an insult, a joke honestly. Hendrix was a guitar innovator, Prince is an entertainer who picked up a guitar!

Prince is a good showman, dancer and his bands live are killer tight and I enjoy seeing his shows for that, but he ain't no GTR virtuoso, he barely gets by! I just listened to his GTR playing in the clip, While my GTR gently weeps, his solo is just above an amateur solo player at best!

You should be. I was never really a huge fan...mostly 'cause in the 80's I had my head up my ass in regards to my choice of music. Or should I say, my hair?

Anyway...got some tix to see him on the 3rd and final date at MSG and was completely blown away. The first hour was non stop music. A literal medley of I don't know how many songs. It was sick. And the band was...insane.

I'm now a believer.

Funny you mention that, did you see the "Prince Show" sketch? Steve Martin was his personal chef of 15 years and said he was happy to meet Prince for the first time. Then Prince made him go sit on a gold moon.

I got excited when the sketch came on because I thought Prince might be playing along in some way. That he didn't was almost as disappointing as that second song of his, but at least they did it when he was on the show and he didn't storm off...

Yeah, he was great...I like the song that goes:

The Prince Shooowwww.
Everybody wants to be free.
The Prince Shoooowwwww.
..and ride in my limousine.
It’s the Prince Shooowwww.
Come take a ride with me.
Jump in under the waterfall
And climb the rainbow tree.
