| Gear maniac | The Next Step OSX and DP 4
Well I have decided to do my next Live recording completely in the computer I will be using a g4, Motu DP4, Motu 2408, Motu 24I/O to record a total of 40 tracks I will let everyone know how it went as soon as we are done. As long as the computer does not lock up I should be oky. here are some particulars... I will be stopping between songs, saving and jumping right back in record. As I figure out more, Will keep yah posted. Oh yeah, Of Course this will be on my mobile truck. Just a test to see. I have had friends have major issues using PT during a Beyonce' Live Recording a few months back. They made it out ok. Just PT kept locking up on all the opening acts, but for her, flawless. good luck. I hope your using either fibre channel or ultra scsi 160 lvd drives. I hope your recording to another medium besides. Using a daw for live recording is a bit scary to me.

I got to agree with Lou. Backup is key to a successful location recording. As you already know, there's no re-do in a live performance.

Everything new is scary. ADAT's were scary, 2" was scary. All new unproven things are scary. That is why pioneers pave the way. They take the risk, learn the mistakes and forge ahead. No need for Fibre Channel or U160. I use Serial ATA. Adaptec Card and Seagate Drives. I am sure when people began mixing in Protools, it was "scary" but they did it and I have 2 gold records and 23 albums to my credit doing so. I refuse to use an SSL/Neve anymore. You cannot justify it with me as necessary. Technology has forged to far ahead for me to stay "back" there. I have a friend who is suffering obselescence becasue he refuses to forge ahead. What I will say, is although the technology has changed, the techniques have not and that is what a lot of younger engineers miss. They go straight for the new technology, but don't have the bkgnd to know from whence we came to know the hows and whys..... Blaze a trail, Try new things. fail a few times and life will be grand. (Not a knock, just one of my philosophy's for life) And I never believe in Luck. I believe in blessings and what the Bible says, count up the cost and make a plan. Otherwise, as the cliche' says, he who fails to plan, plans to fail. I expect great things. I have done some in house test runs of 40 trks and have seen no hiccups (running the system for 2 hours uninterrupted.) I wish the G5 was out for the add'l processor and system bus speed. but hey.... Can't get wet till you dive in. I am using a Raid 1 system for mirroring. And as I said, a quick stop save record scheme between songs. Should take less than 10 seconds for each save, that way, even if the system locked, I can recover swiftly. the good part is I am guinea pigging on one my my personal artists. So who cares if it glitches, this is how you learn what works, etc.... I originally planned to use a couple of HD24's, but wanted to eliminate a transfer step. Bryan Giles |

Everything went well. Installed an additional 120Gig Drive which gave me a total of 7 hours record time at 40 Trcks, Think I only used 2 Hours ![]() Set up and hit record Shoulda took a nap LOL, and barely hit my computer at 15% of processor. Of course I used DP3, not 4. Way to risky and unstable at this time. We will b editing odubbing and mixing very shortly. Hope to have some MP3's up in a few months. Even though MOTU is screwing up when it comes to releasing products on time, I am happy with my Units thus far Bryan |

what are you hauling out for a G4? are you using internal ATA drives? I have been using firewire hot-swap drives so that I can pull out the sleds at the end of the night so that they sit up front with me on the ride home

I am using Internal ATA133 Drives. The Firewire Drives have proved to slow for me. FW 800 Looks way more promising to me. I am using a G4800 bumped to a dual 867 Bryan And yeah I grab the CPU and it rides shotgun |
