Lightbulb Deva 4 VS 788t

Hello,

I need to record an eight channel set up on location, sometimes in heavy weather conditions at 96kHz

My choices are 788t or Deva4, which is a better machine and why would you choose it?

Thank you,

Maria

Both are reliable and clean-sounding. The 788 has a very stable TC generator, I guess the Deva as well (as usually Sound gives TC to the other departments - but so far never had to do with Deva and TC).
788 on its own is smaller and more lightweight. You need to scroll through menus with the buttons and rotary knobs, but you have access to everything you need to change more often (like channel gain, track arming and so on), and I love the controllable LED brightness.
Deva's routing is a little more flexible (but thus also more confusing). You have quicker access to ALL settings, but track arming is done in the menu (not simply by turning the gain knob...). You do need a plastic pen or something to accurately operate the touch screen.

If it's about being REALLY quick in a run-and-gun documentary shoot, I'd go for the 788. OTOH I know of people having taken a pair of Deva V to a Himalaya feature shoot.

Both are great. The 788 requires you to use XLR to TA3 adaptors for mic inputs 5-8. They have other small diffs--most visibly the touch-screen (Deva) vs a menu driven setup (SD). If you have any experience with either companies machines and ways of doing things then I'd go with the machine you know--they both sound fabulous.

The deva 4 only has 4 physical knobs to control 8 ins unlike the 788. for over the shoulder work the virtual faders on the deva are not very helpful. they can only be controlled one by one. it'a not a multi-touch screen.
one the other hand: at 96k the limiters on the 788 can not be used.

Thank you so much for your help. I think limiters at 96kHzwould be very important for the shoot.

Would you recommend this as an alternative? The price is right but it looks like plastic.

There are a lot of 788T's on this board, many Nagras but I know of no HS-P82's. This is not meant to infer quality or value it is just that I have seen no one speak of using this model. There are a few DR-680's in use here. Perhaps someone has the HS and can chime in.
