| Lives for gear |
For a preface: Jagger was great--moving and jiving---in good voice. I heard some moments of astoundingly good guitar playing, but the gtr faded in and out in the mix. Keith was incredible on television when he was posing with that black E355 and strumming the mutha up high. I heard him play some of the old Junk Licks. Ronnie played the same slide guitar he played when he recorded with Rod Stewart as "The Faces." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Someone, more likely a few people on the engineering team, were unprepared since they blew the mix from the opening chord. Fumbling, they re-adjusted, and got a grip 8-10 seconds later. Drums suddenly went up and took over the mix and then were pulled down suddenly. Probably WAS NOT something musically different or a technical problem from off the stage since the Stones people KNOW how to set-up. . . I suspect a slacker cable man who didn't check his work before moving on in his tasks for the quick stage setting up. I can cut some slack to the engineers (except the censoring engineers--who cut out the words, "cum" and "cock"--as in rooster! ) Maybe inputs were crossplugged. Still I salute the recording and remote broadcast engineers who can say, "I mixed the Stones live at the Superbowl in a worldwide broadcast." (overheard in Teluride, CO) What an incredible thing to be able to say----and a very cool thing too!! Charlie Watts sounded great. He still has integrity and was not making fun of the proceedings like the gtr men. Keef sounded great for a few moments and then said , screw it, I'll play anything I want-- Ronnie also said screw it and coughed up a slide gtr line that said, "phuck it!" Someone was Stoned on the Don Was team. p.s. Anyone know how much the Stones were paid? I heard they did it for free and then I heard they got $1M per song??? |
