Agreed. Though being a fine piece of engineering, the K1000s are VERY demanding. If your amp doesn't deliver they sound like utter sh***, bright and scratchy. If it's the right combination then there's nothing like them. I've changed amps twice and I still needed a little more bass.

I have both DT 770 and HD 650. DT770 is good for recording playback (it is closed), otherwise in general it sounds a bit more muffled and less detailed than Sennheiser

The funniest thing is that they sound the best with some amps only, they are true audiophile range cans, but I can't do all the work on them.

IMO gearslutz without 3-4 pairs of different headphones is not real one, as each are good on something and changing headphones is useful routine when analyzing different aspects of the project.
K1000 are excellent for final mix listening, they are very close to real world listening.

I've heard Sennheiser HD600's, which although I liked, fell short of my current fave the AKG K601.

They're reasonably priced ($500 NZD), comfy, and (subjectively) cleaner and a little more neutral than the Sennheiser's, which I find a little too warm.

IMHO the 601's are worth the extra over the 501's, which Oz Fritz likes apparently. They're not in the same class as the K1000's, but then, what are?

Cheers,

bdp
