Question Have you ever worked at the Park Ave Armory (NYC)?

i've been hired to record an event at this, this beast of a venue. i don't know if words can describe how large it is - ginormous is a start. if you're not familiar with it, it's about 37,500 square feet. although the ceiling is domed and my calculus is foggy, if you calculate the room's volume assuming the ceiling was flat and at the maximum height, it works out to around 2.6 million cubic feet. it's f@#$%^*#@$ huge!

i've worked in a lot of venues but nothing this large. has anyone done any recording work there?? i admit i'm a bit scared and would be appreciative of any advice

Thanks for the photo. I have an historical interest in this, as this was used as the studio for the Columbia Workshop's 1937 radio production of "The Fall of the City" by Archibald MacLeish which had Orson Welles as announcer and large crowd scenes, with a 'conducted' chorus. I can see why he would have chosen it.

Fine for him, real problem for you. Just remember that hypercardioid and fig-8 have the highest gamma, that is, discrimination between direct-to-reverberant sound. And hope you have an understanding guy on the board if they are using PA as well

Hi Charlie. I've worked in a lot of similarly sized venues, as both recording and FOH, and systems, and monitor engineer. I'd be happy to help address any specific questions you may have. As panatrope intimated (and can we assume this event is also amplified?) you will want a good working relationship with the sound system provider, but I think it's more the systems and stage techs than the FOH operator who will be more relevant to you.

NY Armory

I lead a student jazz group that performs there every New Year's day for the NY National Guard. We're in the much smaller front area (with all the moose head's and old oak paneling).

The first time I walked into the main area (drill xx?) that you have in the photo, it was so unreal, it was as if it was a movie CGI from Titanic or something.

Good luck and have fun recording there....
