Question Good preamp for live gigs

Hi Guys,

My friend asked me if I knew any good preamps for live gigs ... I know what works for me at studio but when I was doing live PA'S (many years ago)I used sm58 direct to the console ...
Any recommendations?

Cheers

BTW his budget is £300 ($550)

why bother, tell him to save up and buy a good console assuming the console is the weekest link anyway.

Not realy at that price range.
What about that presonus pre?
There was a threat with different pres (I think James 'L.A." Lugo did that shout out with the A-Design stuff in a shoot out).

Depending on the singer, but sometimes it would be more important to swithc the mic from a SM58 to something different.
Is he silbiant...?
There are a lot of nice mics to chose from like the Shre knodensers or the Neumann hand held...
But still we did a shootout with a girl and ended up buying the SM58 because that was what worked best.

Around that price range I really like the Focusrite platinum range. How many channels does he need?
The Twin Track Pro has 2, plus a couple of compressors and selective EQ (cut). The new Octopre has 8channels and both have the option to integrate A/D cards.

Thanks guys,

no good preamps at that price range then ... I thought so, thats why I posted.
He's better off going directly to the desk then.

I'll convay your thoughts to him.

Cheers
