| Gear nut | Good day everyone, I'm working on a documentary and one of the key aspects of the film is the songs that Caribbean children sing while playing certain games. I've been asked to go to a neighboring island and record a small choir of school children. From what I've heard they are actually quite good and have performed throughout the Caribbean and the US. Here's my dilemma: I mainly do voice-overs for TV and radio using: Rode K2 mic Mbox Pro Tools 7 LE 17" Powerbook G4 2 G-Tech 250 GB FW800 drives Behringer BCF2000 (in HUI mode) Mogami cables I'm pretty comfortable with this setup and it works well (for what I do) and the sound quality is ok. I can edit in pro tools quickly and have a high level of confidence that it's going to work when I push record. However, I realized that I might have some better gear laying around and wanted to get some folks opinions on the following setups: Choice A Rode K2's, perhaps with a pair of MXL993's Mackie Onyx 1220 FW directly into powerbook Logic Express 7.1 at 96/24 Choice B Rode K2's, perhaps with a pair of MXL993's Mackie Onyx 1220 running main outs to line in of Mbox Pro Tools 7 LE Choice C (same setup I use for voice-overs) Rode K2's Mbox Pro Tools 7 LE My thoughts: Choice A Pros: Would allow me to use the onyx preamps, connect more mics to capture some of the room sound. better converters in mackie (?), higher sampling rate, firewire less problematic than USB Cons: I don't have the same comfort level using logic yet, harder (for me) to edit audio. Choice B Pros: using mackie preamps, be able to finally use perkins eq, riding the faders (real ones you can touch again!) during the loudest parts, being able to edit in pro tools Cons: many more things to go wrong, more points in the signal path, only being able to record at 48/24, more to take over on the seaplane Choice C Pros: simple, effective, easy to connect and use, high comfort level, less to carry Cons: sound is ok - but not great, only 48/24, I know none of these choices may be ideal, but right now this is all the gear I have and there isn't any way to aquire more before I have to record them (we don't have any pro audio dealers on the island and shipping takes quite a while). As a side note: I also have a Firewire 410, but don't have M-Powered pro tools so it doesn't do me a lot of good (as I'd have to connect it to Logic anyway). and to be quite honest the thing has been quite flakey, so I don't want to take a chance on it until i can figure out what is wrong with it. Any thoughts, insights, hints, suggestions, would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Dave
