Hey all, i wanted to share this info that i figured out for those lucky folks that have a iPad. The latest iOS will accept audio devices over USB as long as they dont draw too much power. I first heard that it would only accept 16bit devices, but just found that it worked with my CE Mic Port Pro which is 24/96k. I wanted to use my iPad as a portable analyzer with a measurement mic, not the internal or a headphone mic since "we are audio pro's here". I'll save the long read and just link you to the video of how i got it to work. Please don't start a debate here, i know this can work many ways...... if you also have a working setup, please post it too. |

Could one use any old USB interface with an iPad? Does it have Core Audio inside?

I'll check on the hub name that I have and post a picture of it, I got it when I was in Taiwan for $5 to use for my iloks and mouse on my laptop, it's a very basic one (but a good size & design for travel). I was under the assumption that only 48k 16bit stuff was gonna work as well, especially since when I tried this setup with the original iPad iOS , the mic port pro would not even be seen before, even in a powered hub. I thought it was because it was 24/96k. I just bought a Shure ux2 mic interface to try as they are 16 bit. It was only a few minutes after trying that with this setup (and it worked fine) that I tried the mic port pro to see if the new iOS 4.2 would recognize 24/96k interfaces..... Which is when I recorded that YouTube video. It all sounds confusing, even to me..... That's why I wanted to do a video right away as it seemed simple at that moment (finally a simple solution!) I will look around to see the exact apple specs for iOS 4.2 and it's ability for audio and midi. From what I understand, you can plug in a USB keyboard now as long as it's class compliant and is powered. I have not tried mine yet, but will. I'll post what I find, and if anyone has some solid info, please share. |

Does a 16 bit device care if it's getting more bits? Aren't they insignificant?

| Lives for gear | That's a good question, I'd like to know if there is a technical explanation that makes sense of this with the iOS. My mic port pro did not change, only the iOS went from version 3.2 to version 4.2.1, so I can assume the way the OS handles inputs has changed.
