Al Di Meola opening for Renaissance in 1978 was a mismatch - high energy fusion preceding progressive folk. ZZ Top opening for Alice Cooper in the early 70s was strange but still it worked. Sky |

By FAR the weirdest one I ever saw was The Cult opening for The Pretenders. Originally The Alarm were supposed to open, but for some reason they couldn't make the show, and the Cult were substituted. I actually went to see The Alarm... most of the people were there to see The Pretenders... you could tell by the tepid response NOBODY appreciated The Cult at all Another kinda weird one I saw was Joan Jett opening for The Police. It was at the very height of Joan's brief "glory"... it was Market Square Arena in Indy, seats about 15,000... after Joan was done, I swear HALF the arena emptied out... I assume it was mainly teenagers who wanted to hear Joan but didn't care for the Police ![]() Come to think of it, another weird one also involved The Police... Comiskey Park Chicago... Flock of Seagulls, Ministry, and I believe Simple Minds opened for The Police. What was strange about this is this was EARLY Ministry, when they were a synth-pop band -- before they transformed into an ugly industrial metal band. I only mention this because they crowd ADORED Ministry -- much more than the Police. Frankly, I saw The Police 3 or 4 times in concert and they were never really very good live. Great band on record, however |

Montreux, July 4th 2009: Steely Dan, Dave Matthews Band & Chickenfoot. May seem a strange billing, but it was a GREAT night. |

I didn't go but I thought that M83 supporting Kings Of Leon was very odd.

Thanksgiving day, 1977-Houston,TX. ZZ Top -back in their home town and just released hugely successful Fandango album. (get hi, everybody, get hi) The unfortunate opening act was an relatively unknown, Mexican conjunto band complete with trumpets, acoustic guitar bass, girls in big skirts --, you get the picture. And they were fine.... but the rowdy, drunk crowd was having no part of it. Within minutes the boos rang out and not long after the beers and cokes began pelting the stage. The band literally ran for their lives before they finished the first song. It was horrible. I've often wondered what they were thinking sending that band out there in that situation. |
