Question Broadcast engineers, a little help please

I have several limiters given to me by a friend in radio. I have no manuals for anything.

one is a crl stereo gain controller

it has settings for
gain reduction (I know what this does)

then it has an "operation" knob with the folowing settings

"proof"
"S"
"M"
"F"

what do these settings do?

then it has a switch labeled "BAND" and settings for
"Dual"
"BOTH"
"WIDE"

can anyone break these down for me?

It sounds great on the two buss but it returns in mono for some reason even though it has stereo ins and outs

I have two other weirdo units too.

If anyone is familiar with this unit or broadcast stuff in general I'd appreciate the help

When I worked in radio we called CRL stuff "Crappy Radio Limiting". I'm not sure what you intend to do with it but I can't imagine it being worth any wasted time or hassle.

my thoughts were to use it to approximate the crappy sound of a radio signal, A/Bing shit to avoid surprises later.

and ALL radio limiting comprsession sounds like ass, but maybe it might be cool if it isnt compressing stuff that has already been compressed in mastering, what the hell I'll give it a shot

hey it was free and it looks cool!

so what the heck does "proof s m f" mean?

I always wondered that why Orban processors cost USD10,000.00

Fuel for the fire, and maybe for thought:

If memory serves (its been a LONG time) the F in orban has a couple of different possible options depending on when & where the device is to be used:
1) FILTER (Rf filtering, carrier wave filtering, HP/LP to remove bandwidth from the limiting path
2) It could also be frequency selective limiting
3) Final limiting, aka finalization, or final brickwall.

I'm assuming you searched and did not find a manual?

I also suppose its not this one:
http://www.orban.com/brochures/crl/TVS%203003.pdf
but there are several CRLs on Orban's website. if you can find exactly which model, you can probably find a manual that has been uploaded on the 'net.

Hope these thoughts help!

Ahh, you got to love those new tags!

Little by little, I've been going into the archives and adding as many as I can.

Did you get a fair price for the sucker?

I got a CRAZY price for it, something like $600 on Ebay, not bad for a gift from a radio station storeroom.

sometimes I miss having it because you patch it in an you have the broadcast "sound" to reference immediately. I never mixed anything through it but it was a nice reference tool
