Tips Redux - Horns

thanks everyone for their help with the strings. i ended up using royers on the violins, schoeps on the viola and cello, and earthworks for room sounds. everything came up pretty nice, though the ampex doesn't have much headroom (but sounds great in the mix).

so now we're doing horns, and again i would really be appreciative of some tips:

1 trumpet, 1 baritone sax, 1 flugelhorn, 1 french horn, 1 trombone

again, should i track live or try to isolate (tracking live will be tough considering the room). 2 small iso rooms, an equipment room, a hallway outside, and the control room are available for tracking (room sounds are not great). bleed isn't so much an issue since all the players are pretty spot on with intonation. but i play viola/violin, so don't know much anything about horns (other than not to play live with a trumpet player behind you. )

the mics and pres available:

schoeps cmc6 w/ cardiod capsules (pair)
royer 121 (pair)
neumann tlm-103 (pair)
earthworks M50 (pair)
sennheiser md-421 (pair)
sennheiser 441 (single)
shure sm-57 (4)
shure ksm-32 (pair)
EV RE-20 (pair)

2 millenia preamps (4 ins total)
1 ampex tube mx-10 mixer (4 ins/2 outs)
1 altec 1566 pre (one in)
1 really nice preamp (one in)
1 that i can't remember

interface: motu HD 192
compressors: art pro vla and 2 rncs.
eq: two old blue pultec eqs.
effects: eventide h3000 (original)

i imagine the 421s and the royers (with pop screens) might sound good, but again, any tips would be appreciated.

I'd be looking at the dynamics for spot mics.

The Frenchie will be tough, as it's usually played pointed the other direction and muted.....

The SM57 might suprise you on the Bari, depending on the player and the piece.

thanks tiny. yes, i'm most apprehensive of the french horn. not really sure where the sound(s) are best picked up. i'm sure he'll have some suggestions.

i'll try the 57 on the bari, though he might not be very happy about it.
