We are very happy with our Sony FX1 and FX7 cameras. We do our editing on a very fast Mac using FCP Studio 2 for software. We also have VEGAS on an equally fast PC.

Norse Horse is correct it is all the "extras" that start bringing up the cost of doing video.

Right now we have about 18 terabytes of storage and will soon be going to 22 terabytes. Video takes up a whole lot of room on a disk.

We are recording concerts with two Fostex FR2LE recorders fed by a Symetrix microphone preamp. The syncing of the sound and video is done in post.

Good topic!

I'm using a 550d with the rode video mic, pro set up for under £1000.

If I had the cash, i'd get the 5dmkii and a Sony PCM-D50.

I'm just loving DSLR's!!!!

One problem that I have with concert video is getting my external audio recorder to sync up to the video. I usually am doing 3 camera shoots with Canon HG-21 cams while recording stereo audio with a SoundDevices 722. Even when I remember to record in 48k (doh!), after 10-15 minutes the sync is lost in FCP on all cameras.

What can I do to help this? I have tried Plural Eyes and that doesn't seem to help this. My only other option is to keep breaking up my vids into 10 minute segments which isn't always convenient and looks unprofessional.

Thanks for your help! Too bad the Panasonic AG AF-100 costs $4800. :(

Question

Quick question, GSBE:

Are you trying to mix the HG-21 audio with the audio recorded by the 722? Or are you completely substituting the audio using the 722?

Cheers.

I'm not using the audio from the HG-21 at all. I have taken the output from the 722 and put it into the mic input of the camera to see if that would make it easier to sync up later...it hasn't. :(

If your audio line is king, then your various 3-camera clips are where the synch adjustments takes place, whenever you shift viewpoint and especially if you use crossfades rather than cuts. PE works just fine for this and even does some stretching if you use the "try really hard" setting. There's nothing unprofessional about shifts between clips, certainly more interesting than a static wide shot boring into the stage for 90 minutes. Convenience is not about naming, numbering, ingest, positioning and rendering 300 or more clips, though something like Adobe Bridge is certainly helpful.

Does anyone here care to comment on the AG HMC40 or HMC150 from Panasonic?

You should give it a try. I think it's the best electronic format camera
