Can anybody give me some ideas on what are the best headset mics for sound reinforcement/recording? Thanks! |

It seems like everyone is making a headworn mic these days - Sennheiser, Shure, AT, etc. If that's what you mean. Headset Mic to me includes headphones. The headworn mics I like are the Countryman E6 http://Countryman.com, and any of the Voice Technologies models http://voicetechnologies.net

As far as I know the E6 is an omni and that's not so good if there's a lot of sound on stage. I would recommend the DPA 4088 which is what I ended up with after audition a few others. No headphones though!. Beware that some of these mics are better if they are not directly in front of the mouth. Popshields may also be needed. Good luck. |

Thats true. The E6 and most other heardworn mics are omni. Keep in mind however, that because the mic is so close to the mouth, very little preamp gain is required. The reduced gain drops the ambient noise dramatically, even for an omni mic. Incidentally, there are cardioid versions of the E6 and the Voice Tech mics. I'm told the Austrian Opera is using the VT800. |

In my experiences, it doesn't matter if the mic is an omni- it is so close to the mouth that sound bleed is the least of your worries.... Rather make sure that you have the wearer sing while you listen for plosives. The E6 can be a nasty bugger if too close to the mouth. I generally prefer a DPA 4061, but I've mixed plenty of shows with E6's and had fine results. --Ben |
