I am eternally grateful to Mr Eicher for the body of work he has brought to us all. I've been fortunate to work with a number of his artists and have been privy to impressions and/or stories of his "eccentricities"...

Having not been there myself I wouldn't take it any further.

Well, we all re-tell and speculate upon the character and methods of famous producers/sessions , be it RVG, the Beatles, Phil Spector or so many others. I guess precious few of us were actually there in the room with these guys!

I'm not interested in any 'scandals'- I joked before- but rather in the ' the methods' of Mr. Eicher. Given the often-great results, he must be doing something right.

I'd also say that ECM's 'street credibility' could only gain with a few 'real-life' episodes!

So come on then...

hey I haven't checked this thread in a while but, while having a moment here and there to enjoy a little music, ECM is still hot on my ears and soul!

Anhour Brahem is amazing--the record with Dave Holland and John Surman!

oh boy.

that's good news for sure which is why I put this here.

this music is vital.

the techniques for capturing it are also.

I am surprised how much reverb is used on a lot of the productions.

makes me wish I had an EMT 140 or a big ass room.

sigh.

look forward to cracking into the 'new series' recordings soon and particularly Arvo Part.

but right now on the platter is another GEM!

Julian Priester and Marine Intrusion

'POLARIZATION'

yep yep

'77 recorded by Martin Wieland

yep

Ok , people, let's do it!

We should have an acoustic/orchestral/jazz forum here. Maybe we could start as a topic on the "so much gear..." page, 'cause people read that more often than they do here.

What do you think? Ideas?

Come on, let's do it! I bet a lot of amazing things can be discussed here.

I have worked at Bauer Studios a couple of times. Great place! Very good sounding room with 7m high ceiling, very beautiful sounding Steinway D, great mic collection (8 U67s I think, plus U47, tons of SD etc), Neve VXS console, 960L, TC 6000 etc.

Also great for mastering. Johannes Wohlleben - one of the engineers there - got great ears and taste

Wow - blast from the past - bring me back to my late teenage/university years tripping on that album...

Heard very little from Hassel in the past few years - a bit with Bluescreen, and some soundtrack/movie stuff, one of which I dug - "Owning Mahoney" - not much else - then again - I haven't had my ear to the ground much lately...

He has recorded another masterpiece called "Fascinoma" with acoustic trumpet sound with a very particular production: live with some others (also Ry Cooder) in a church, without any processing on the sound, except for the natural reverberation and and an image made exclusively by musician and microphone placement.

All this has been recorded directly on stereo on a modified multitrack tape recorder (can't remember wich) with custom made heads to use all the tape for just 2 tracks.

Incredible atmosphere, obviously...

Fascinoma is one of the most amazing sounding recordings I've EVER heard. Production is out of this world.

And the music is just.......my jaw dropped when I heard it the first time.

Don't walk...RUN out and buy this disc.

My favorite Hassell is probably Fourth World Vol.1 Possible Musics with Brian Eno. Great atmospheric stuff... It's an old Editions EG disc (EEGCD 7) from 1980, lovely...
With some great Percy Jones bass bits, Nana Vasconcelos and Ayibe Dieng laying out the fleshy grooves, tasty~!

All the stuff on water lily acoustics is interesting. Same minimalist ethos and rig with a steadfast devotion to coincident and near coincident techniques. An interesting alternative style minimalist approach is represented by Todd Garfinkle's M-A recordings. He tends to favor spaced DPAs, interesting contrast between the two. I quite like his recording of Mark Nauseef's "With Space in Mind", quite nice.

Thumbs up ECM New Series

However, Manfred Eicher, the producer, has to have his hands slapped as he reaches to adjust the faders on the recording console.

Let van Geest, a master, do that work!
Yes! Miserere! And Hilliard Ensemble's performance of Gesualdo's Tenebrae--magnificent. Clean, clear. Several others too.
Another win for the Plushmeister.

Just been listening to this, and the other Fourth World vol. 2 "dream theory in Malaya" recorded here in Hamilton by Lanois at Grant Ave. in '81. I grew up listening to these both - brings me back!

BTW - "Fascinoma" sounds luscious! Liner notes say it's all Tim de Paravicini (EAR) kit recorded with Pearl (rectangular) capsules fabricated in custom mics. Direct to 1/2 " 2 track on BASF 900 Maxima. A/D conversion to mastering thru custom EAR tube A/D as well.

Yowza! I can understand why this recording sounds so good - thanks to Alfonso for recommending this one - one of the first really great 'sounding' CD's I've heard in awhile!

Another ECM fanatic - late to this thread. I'm a 'glass half empty' guy, so I rarely look at the 'Good News' forum.
About the gear. I remember someone who knew Kongshaug passed on some information to a drum forum I used to look at. He was apparently tickled the forum members were fans of his.
His take was that it was all 'ordinary' and 'standard' gear. I can't remember the details, but it was similar to the list mentioned earlier.
Certainly I lusted long and hard when the Helios from Talent was being hawked by a gear pimp about 4 years ago. Apart from the fact it was Helios (and awesome), but the history!
Everyone has different tastes. I happen to love Garbarek. I think he's one of my favourite musicians of any genre. I saw the Hilliard Ensemble with Garbarek at St Paul's Cathedral, London. I saw (and met) Ralph Towner a couple of years ago. Nice guy! I saw (and met) Eberhard Weber in 1979. Another nice guy, he struck me as one of the coolest of the ECM crowd to hang out with. Frissell was in his band at the time. Saw Azymuth in the early 80's. Kenny Wheeler is a favourite of mine. Love the first album with the synth ostinato's. You know they borrowed the Synthi AKS from Surman.
The other ensemble I love is the Scandinavian version of Jarrett's band.
Garbarek, Palle Dannielsen and Jon Christensen.
Never saw them unfortunately.
Christensen is probably my favourite jazz drummer. I hear he is weak and quite unwell these days - it could be a malicious rumour.
Finally, I also thank ECM for introducing me to new music.
I LOVE the Arvo Part albums. I try to love the Molvaer albums, but the bloody guitarist winds me up. I love everything about the trumpet and programming, but the 80's Belew guitar grates. ECM is better than that IMHO.
Anyway, Eicher should get a Grammy for services to music.

I like the classical ECM recordings a lot. I own most of their Arvo Pärt stuff, and everything that includes the Hilliard Ensemble, Christoph Poppen and Gidon Kremer is all really good stuff. I love the Bach cantata from the "Richercar"-CD. and also the "Morimur", which features great performances by Hilliard and Poppen.

Wow-so glad there are other ECM junkies out there! I remember looking through the used records all the time back in college. Anything that was on ECM would go home with me. Plus they were all between 99 cents and 3 bucks!

My fav of all -- Jack Dejohnette "New Directions" (esp. track 1)

I'm all for a jazz forum BTW!

I must admit one of my favorite things in life now is to thumb through used records and find an ECM recording which LOOKS UNPLAYED for .50 or a buck.

yippee!!!!

can I get a holler for John Surman??!!!!!

Thumbs up john taylor

[quote=kevk]Agreed on Azimuth. John Taylor has to be the most under-rated pianist since... well... ever. He is also on three (I think only three) of the Peter Erskine trio ECM records; all highly recommended.

-kk[/QUOTE

i'll also think he is highly underrated, perhaps because he doesn't show of or he sell's himself to bad? don't know....
had the fortune to play some jamsessions as a double bass player with john taylor some years ago, and he was really one of the most inspiring musicians i've ever met.
really showed me how to make music every little moment you touch your instrument. even when you practise. he just shows you some examples, and he's into it every second and a simple scale sounds like a piece of music...and he's
very british, very very nice guy. have to think a lot of him, even though i don't play much jazz anymore.

we also played some tunes of "double double you" a kenny wheeler album which is one of my favorite ecm records, not soundwise but the playing and songwriting is amazing....

i also like the "keith jarret live in norway". one my favorite jarret album's.

best wishes,

aves

oh, i also really have to recommend Johannes Wohlleben. he recorded a very big band at bauer, in which i did some little electr. stuff and he was so quick, it was amazing.
drums, percussion, piano, strings, double bass, sax, trumpet, guitar, two strings, electronics, vocs. mostly everything in one room.
he set up in one hour and we recorded a whole album
in one day, and it really sounded fantastic. he also mixed and mastered the record.

can find it at
http://www.sebastianschunkemusic.com/

i think bauer is one of the best studios for jazz and acoustic music in germany.

POWER SPOT by Jon Hassell is one of my all time favorite albums. Both Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois lent a hand on that one.

Incredible!

There's a little commentary on my blog here:

http://www.jonmattox.com/blog/?p=94

I'm also a HUGE fan of Jan Garbarek, and also Arvo Pärt.

Also, the ECM albums of Steve Tibbets, Eberhard Weber, John Abercrombie are great, and didn't Meredith Monk release an album on the label too....

bye!

Jon
