Question How large does the fur have to be?

So we're renting an MD441 for a remote thing and it's gonna be used as a handheld mic outdoors. I'm gonna have to go ahead and get a fur for this but I'm a little confused so I thought I might ask you almighty people for advice.

The 441 is pretty long obviously and the grille ends about 4 inches from the top. If I get a foam/fur combo, does that have to cover the ENTIRE GRILLE of the mic, or just the top half or so? I mean, it's a front-address, hypercardio mic so I dunno if we're gonna get windnoise or not if the fur only covers the top end.

I'm asking cos I can't find any furs/jammers made especially for the 441. So it's going to be a multisize Rycote or Reinhardt.

Thanks.

The hypercard pattern is created by the vents behind the diaphragm... any wind entering the grill will cause rumbles/pops. I'd be certain to cover the entire grill, plus a half inch, minimum... or look for a large foamie, designed to cover a LDC. Just so the entire mesh and a bit more is covered... and secured...

I try to keep this a closely, well-guarded secret... but one time I needed windjammers for a pair of Rode NT-1's, so I went into a K-Mart and bought a teddy bear, sliced the arms off, hollowed them out... and they worked perfectly! Not just okay or "in-a-pinch" but absolutely up to spec-- only the hair-tousling breezes even began to distort.

Naturally I sewed up the wounds as best I could and now a I have a teddy bear that's really ready to teach a lesson in compassion to some little tyke.

Hah, that's a great story. Thanks for the info, that's kind of what I suspected. I'll have to go with a shotgun-style fur and foamie then, to cover the whole mic.

This was what I was referring to:

WindTech CT30 Foam Microphone Windscreen (Black) CT30B - B&H

Microphone Windscreen, 2.375" Inside Diameter - Black Allows the user to use an affixed foam 'Pop' filter over large studio style microphones.

Might not be enough... but it looks like it might just work.

How big does the fur have to be?

Use the standard foam windshield and use a Rycote special Windjammer over the top.

If you are not sure, give Rycote a ring direct - they are very helpful.

Rycote also do foam windshields, so they may be able to do both.

And - yes - you *do* have to cover all the slots as has been said above.

Fantastic advice. I hope you buried him afterwards.

Well I assume he/she bled to death. But if the recording was worth it, then they will Rest In Peace a Martyr.

I will definitely try this next time I need a budget windshield. How did you secure it?

That's the most astonishing part of the whole tale... the teddy bear arms were a perfect friction fit over the body of the NT-1... and then kind of loose around the top where the capsule is... I swear there must be some sort of collusion between the stuffed animal and the microphone manufacturers, this is unbelievable that it could have been a coincidence!

Which Teddy was it?

Was it a Build-A-Bear affair or a Market Stall jobbie?

I want the whereabouts of this bear. I have a NT1 that could do with a cuddle.

Tell the truth, I wasn't paying the slightest attention, but why does "Market Stall" have some sort of familiar ring to it? The tag sewn into its hind quarters reads "Made for Sears Corporation, Hoffman Estates IL 60179 in China." The 'surface' is washable, too! Lucky me!

Its serial number seems to be 122609 CV 290235. I should have checked what kind of warranty you get with these...

Gotta give props to the Reinhardt company - guy built a custom made fur and foamie for me, no extra charge. Really good service. I would've gone Rycote but I thought I'd spend my money on a nordic company instead. I try to shop close to home, you see.
