I purchased a '98 Winnebago Adventurer and spent the past 6 months gutting it and rebuilding the interior. A very good friend and I built a workspace (racks/desk/etc..) and installed all my equipment within. We've done our best to anticipate potential difficulties inherent in creating furniture which will withstand the trials of road use. The intended use of the studio is personal use and recording with friends. Just traveling to scenic locations and making music. I'd like to re-invent the American Dream. The total value of equipment onboard is about $20,000. That includes computers, rack gear, mixers, monitors, stomp/non-rack fx, guitars, and mics. My problem is that I've been having a difficult time getting insurance for the contents of the vehicle. I have insurance for collision/driving/liability, but I haven't been able to find a reasonable rate for insuring personal possesions. I have an alarm system, everything is locked down, and covers were made for all the equipment so that any peekers won't see any eye candy. Any advice? Do I just need to bolster the security system with some homebrew devices? I've considered wiring another (even LOUDER) siren to the motion sensors, except i don't want to encourage a potential thief to bash the monitors thinking that the terrible noise is coming from the big, shiny speakers. I don't want additional liability concerns from blowing out somebody's eardrums (or potential recourse from my other idea.. mild electrical shock from contact with the vehicle's exterior). Ideally.. I'd love to find a reasonable rate for an insurance policy. Peace of mind on the road would be great. Thanks in advance for suggestions. |

The American Federation of Musicians offers a good equipment insurance plan, as well as liability insurance. They welcome sound folk.

Do you know how many 'technically mischevious' people are going to get up & race off to some pawn shop or a feed store to buy a roll of chicken wire & an electric fencer in the morning? How do you explain to your kids why you're nailing chicken wire to your favorite parking spot? Do you know how many of us are going to get to hear our wives whining "The lights on the garage don't work anymore' because we were cheap & just hooked an extension cord to the light fixture instead? How do you explain to your neighbor that you're 100% sure their dog's winker got the green mile treatment because he peed on your fancy rims for the last damn time?? dfegad stike | |
