Talking What is the sound of Audi?

Okay sports car fans!!!

I know at least two folks that wouldn't mind the sound of that V-10 TFSI R8...

Me and my buddy who turned me onto this clip.

Video: What is the sound of Audi?

Check out the audio gear used on the track and in the anechoic chamber.

A girl I know was given the Spyder version of the V10 R8 as her company car when she graduated university! Nice work if you can get it.

Had to talk her way out of half a dozen speeding tickets in the first 10 days!

Weel, it seems that Audi and audio are tied right from the start.

From what I remember, Audi was founded by a German called Horch.
In fact, august Horch was building cars long before the birth of the Audi brand, under his own name (1899) .
When he bailed out of his own company, part of the agreement was that he will not build cars under his name anymore. So, searching for another brand under which to identify his new creations, a nephew suggest to translate his name, Horch ( German for 'Listen') into his latin equivalent - Audi, in fact.

So, we are bound to ...Audi to Audi!

Ahhh...so close to home

This is precisely the stuff that I and my crew do in the automotive sector (in my day-job). Sound Quality is a many-splendored thing, and designing for product sounds is one of the coolest gigs out there (at least it is for me and my peeps here in the lab).

Granted, most of what we do these days is work on the designs of actuators (powered seats, primarily), but you'd all be pretty surprised (and probably shocked) as to just how much signal processing / analysis goes in in trying to get the product to sound 'right' (and more often than not, this has little or nothing to do with conventional metrics such as dB(A)).

I used to do a lot of exhaust sound quality when I worked at Tenneco, and that never got old either; seriously, I'm not sure most people understand just how important sound quality is to the experiences they have when using a given product.

It is. I had no idea Audi put that much effort into the sound experience of their cars. Or that they had a state of the art recording studio designed just for capturing sounds of their automobiles. (the whole composition thing was a little hokey thought)

If only I could afford an Audi now.

Steve, et al, very interesting. Reminds me of the incredible attention to detail the Germans lavished on the old MB 300 SLR racing car team. Many of these cars had painted on their fenders, "This car has never lost a race nor dropped out of a race due to mechanical failure." The team at Audi is quite the same. Use the best tools, apply tremendous attention to detail and leave nothing to chance.

Having a big budget helps a lot.

Disclaimer: I was raised with "Es ist immer Deutscher besser" - "It's always better German" - so I have a slight inclination to approve this approach. Nevertheless, a marvelous effort at creating a great product. Now if I can just find the key to their gear locker . . .

Cheers

Recording cars is not THAT much fun if you have to do it every day...

Arme Pueppschoen - poor baby! LOL Funny how the other guy's job always looks better than our own. "When the grass starts looking better on the other side of then fence go home and water your own lawn and it will be just as green." Lots of folks would love your job, for a week or so anyway.

Yeah. I find it just a little disturbing. Corporate sounds? Hmmm.

Introducing the all new Audi VSTi 5.8 HD - Performance. Style. Headroom.

Maybe they'll merge with Kurzweil.
