Talking Microphones in hand luggage

Hi

I'm doing some recording in New York this month and want to take a few, say 8, favorite mics with me (I'm in London). Has anyone had any similar experiences or issues with airport scanner staff or customs etc? `i'll carry them as hand luggage.

I recently took 12 lav mics and 2 58's in my hand luggage to Japan. At both ends they made me unpack it and explain it, but it was totally fine. Don't worry about it.

(EDIT: Oh wait. You're flying to the USA. I hope you're a praying man. Do wear clean underwear. )

I usually don't have problems with scanners at airports concerning gear, although in 2004 I had big problems leaving Tel Aviv. All I had in my carry-on was a Sans amp bass driver, and they kept me for 2 hours interrogating me. They finally let me go, but confiscated the Sans Amp, and recieved it later in the mail. Boy, was I upset.

I fly through LaGuardia, (NYC), all the time with different gear, and I never have problems. Just allow yourself extra time in case you do. I wish you safe travel.

Best,

Kenny

I travel a lot with microphones.
I usually travel with a Blue Bottle, or some other type of tube mic.

I just tell the person at the metal detector that I have a microphone in my carry on.

I always get stopped and checked, but at least I tell them what they are going to be looking at to avoid total confusion.

Good luck

That's 'cuz they're not interested in audio gear...or bombs, for that matter. What they're most concerned with intercepting at LaGuardia is TOE NAIL CLIPPERS! On different occasions I've had two nail clippers, a pair of collapsible nail scissors, and a green xcelite tweaker all confiscated from me at LaGuardia.

I have travelled to and from the US with my DPA 4003's and they have always ignored them and focused intirely on my double bass bow and the laptop. Oh, and yes they ALWAYS pick up the bow by the hair

I travel with gear in carry on all the time. Almost never have a problem in the US. Get checked a lot flying through Frankfurt and Amsterdam. I always try to bring a couple manuals with me and have them packed right on top, so that they can see them first thing. This helps a lot when I am in a situation where me and the security guys do not speak the same languages.

do it all the time. the way i do it is to go to the customs office at the airport show them the mics and give them the serial numbers..they do a stamp and a paper to carry "tools of the trade" cuts down on all the crap going and comming..and avoids any problems with import tariffs. but you got to get there early they make you wait,.
