Help with Communication systems

We want to get wireless intercom system for production sound (film set). 2 channels. 10 to 12 headsets. We need at least 4 to be wireless. From what we have researched, Telex seems to be one of the best. We are looking at going for the telex BTR 800 for the 4 wireless and intergrating RTS for 6 to 8 wired. We would prefer to go all wireless but it gets out of our budget going with multiple BTR 800s.
Concerns:
It sounds like the UHF and VHF is getting pretty congested (especially with digital TV now) and not sure what the FCC is doing on regulation. Are we going to get stuck with a wirelss system we wont be able to use in certain locations?
Also if we travel to other countries (Australia, New Zealand, Asia etc) are we going to be able to use our BTR 800 that will be preconfigured to certain frequencies.
What is the industry using? how do they get around this?

We're not getting around this

Wide band systems with many frequencies to choose from are the future, but we're screwed anyway

Anyone else?,

what's the way to go,

Clearcom have come out with their digital systems, but the latency and sound quality is terrible, got to try that recently,

What are the chances travelling around running into problems with a BTR 800,

If needed, is it expensive to have the BTR800 re programmed for apppropriate frequencies in a given country?

In europe, our previously reserved frequencies are being sold to telecom companies for dtv and what not, so we will basically have no "safe" frequencies.
So I'd say having a system with only a couple of frequencies is not advisable for travelling..

The easiest and least expensive solution is to use Nextel. I do not know how good the coverage is in Europe. In the USA, it is excellent. Most production companies in Brazil use them too.

You can also go with a standard 450 MHz radio system: You will need radios with full duplex capability and computer interfaces for programming. Icom, Motorola an Yaezu all make them. You can use a base station or just radios. You will want to add a mountable antenna.
Interfaces are available with relays for use with intercom systems. Certain countries will not allow the use of these walkie talkies. (Russia, Turkey and China for example)

BTR systems are available in several different frequency blocks. Inside of these blocks the systems are all frequency agile. There is a lot of data online as to what frequencies are available in what locations. Or you can call Telex or a Telex dealer. There are blocks available in the 500MHz range, so you should be okay. These systems are expensive. And don't forget you will need a good antenna distribution system.

Clearcom makes a system which available in Europe based on cell phone technology. It works pretty well, but is a bit fiddly. And you will need the computer interface to program the belt packs.

Regards;
Danny
