Most bands these days let fans share live recordings on the interweb, and plenty are great recordings.
An advantage of file sharing.

I make lots of live albums. Granted, none of them ever go beyond band parents and nerdy band kids using them as ring tones.

And of course I am one of those nerdy band kids as Hail, West Virginia is my ring tone.

Maynard Ferguson, MF Horn 4 & 5 (Live at Jimmy's) is one of the finest live on-the-spot impromptu recordings ever. It is pure musicianship to die for.

i've been to multiple shows where the band is selling the live album of the show you just saw on the way out the door. great revenue for the band & instant gratification for the fans.

i've been much more hesitant to buy live DVD's these days, as I've been disappointed in the last few years when you put it on and the "live" music has clearly gone thru a lot of production after the fact. doesnt even sound live anymore, more like a subpar album mix. i'm not saying this is the case for majority of artists, just that i've run across it several times recently and makes me try and find a way to check it out before i consider buying it.

Is there a deeper answer? My gut reaction is the death of the aor radio format.
