Another DIY Jecklin Disk - PICTURE DIARY!

FINALLY finished my home brew Jecklin disk today. Can't wait to try it on an grand piano. My approach might seem crude to many, but I didn't have access to very good tools and materials so I had to pick the easiest path haha.

I was ******** enough to use a cut-off blade as the disk and I attempted to drills holes in it with normal drill bits. At least the drill bits were $5 for a pack so they were expendable.

Looks real good to me. My only concern would be the sound absorbent quality of the foam. I worried about that on mine so I hung fake lambs wool on it. NHK did the same thing when they experimented with the Jecklin disc. I'd like to claim the idea but cannot.

Let us know how it works.

Thanks boojum.

Yeah I've done a lot of reading on the material of the pads. However I couldn't find any suitable material at Home Depot. So I came across the sit Foamorder which ships custom cut foams. This particular foam is often used as acoustic foams according to them. Best part is they can cut them to your exact dimensions. Weren't cheap though. Almost 30 bucks on those 2 pads.

The only thing that strikes me is the size and placement of the wooden board at the bottom of the assembly. I think you are going to get some nasty reflections from it. My Jacklin disk is on an ORTF mount so there is very little surface for the sound to reflect from. Just an observation.

Nice job!

Good point. The base is larger than it needs to be, but the hardware to do this right may be hard to find. You could do away with it entirely: Drill two small holes through the disc near the top and use them to suspend the disk with thin cable. You could hang it from a boom stand.

My solution:

Base: 6 mm (1/4") plywood as base. Cut an approximately 10*30mm notch at the edge and epoxy a light stand bronze spigot (Manfrotto) with the right size screw hole pointing in out. Glue 2 pieces of 30*50mm plywood on both sides with epoxy, carve enough to fit over the spigot. This spigot fits a mic/light stand as is. If angle adjustment is needed, get a knee joint (Manfrotto)

Mic holders: screws sticking out from both sides, about 5 cm from the back edge, machine bolt with the head removed. These take normal mic holders.

Foam: one 15cm foam disk, centered, on both sides. On top of that 30cm disks, this makes the center thicker.

Cover: grey fleece with machine sewn front side, hand sewn back after it is pulled over the disk.

I built a Jecklin using an old Oral Roberts LP. I covered it with foam and then the fake lambs wool. It is light enough that the bottom half of a plastic mic holder works just fine to hold the disc in place. The mic supports are separate from the disc and need be set each time it is used, which is not often.
