Guess the Mic

Here is a fun little game. Guess the mic used to record this clip (the performer is a 15-year-old high-school student).

You only have 11 votes to date.
Why not give it a day or so?
Build up the count a bit before you let us know the truth.

Just a suggestion.
Do what you feel is best.

Right. I'm subtly trying to encourage people to vote before the big revelation.

Now out of order ( me )

You could record this bad with any of the mics listed.
The young musician is ok though, but don´t let him / her hear your recordings
sofar not to stop from playing altogether

Is there a noise gate on this? I hear something odd about the attack and decay. Maybe it's me.

I voted the MD421.

No, no noise gate or other processing. I will say that this mic had to be split to feed both my recording and P.A. (sound reinforcement). You may be hearing some of the P.A. coming back into it.

What do you think is wrong with the recording?

If you won't back up your statement and can't offer your judgement without being "harsh" then yeah, take it easy and take care.

any answers are pissing in the wind, so to speak.

could be any mic. I mean, seriously.. I don't see how anyone could possibly determine what the microphone is? Not knowing the venue/not having heard the singer in person, blah blah..

Matti's cool. You must understand that sometimes things get lost in translation. I vouch for this man.

You didn't say anything wrong, Matti.

It's just that the European way is a bit less "politically correct" (you come right out and say what you think without worrying about anything)

your english is fine!

Glad you enjoy it! Chances are you won't get it right but this is only supposed to be a fun guessing game.

To the winner goes $1,000,000 worth of bragging rights!

Correct! Just have fun! Or don't play if you don't want to!

You hear a singer in there?

OK, I know the suspense is killing everyone. There was one correct vote. Leddy got it right. It's a Sennheiser MD421. This mic did double duty between P.A. and recording. Originally it was to have been a cardioid condenser mic but the condenser mic started to squeal before we could get enough gain to P.A. I had brought a pair of (dynamic) MD421s just in case and they were put into service.

$1,000,000 worth of bragging rights go to Leddy. Hope you had fun!

Ah yes, but did you use the original MD421 or the newer MD421MKII?

It sounds like the newer MD421....

Just kidding.

MD421 II, the newer one.

Say, who's the wise guy who cast a vote for the MD421 after the answer had been revealed? tutt

Last year I received a coupon in the mail from Sam Ash offering me $200 off any purchase over a certain amount. I went down and picked up the second of my two MD421 II's. The clerk did some calculations and congratulated me on having picked up the mic for below their cost

During the concert the conductor would occasionally address the audience from behind a lectern. There had previously been problems with "p" popping which were brought to my attention. A co-worker had told me more than once that "you can't pop an RE16!" So I borrowed a buddy's E-V RE16 and put a foam windscreen over it and my co-worker was right -- you can't pop an RE16! The conductor and everyone involved were delighted.

Now that I think about it maybe an SM7B with its thick windscreen would have been just as pop proof but I never tested it.

FYI, don't use a MKII and an original MD421 together or as a stereo pair on the same source. They do not sound the same and you will hear the difference straight on.

I tried to use that combination on some congas once and it was not acceptable to me.

Furthermore, I will now close the poll and remove the second MD421 vote, just because I can.

You are a man of great integrity.

I don't own any Rode NT5's but now I am curious.
