Ribbons Suited for Side of M/S?

Hey all,

I'm looking for a companion for my M160 hypercardioid to do some M/S drum overheads.

Which mics are in the running as Side mics? I see the R-121 is lopsided. How important is this? So far I can see the M130 and SF1 are advertised as identical on both sides of the figure-8.

Any others? I'm attracted most to the Coles 4038 and it looks pretty similar on it's charts.

Any direct experience with ribbons in M/S is appreciated.

Thanks,
Bobby

M130 are designed to go with the M160 for M/S recordings.

A royer doesn't sound the same on both lobes.

Hey guys,

I was getting pretty slutty on the Coles and Royers but the weak US dollar just drove Canadian prices on the M-130 locally down to $575 CDN. That's too smokin' to pass up so I ordered one.

BTW, when my band was here for rehearsal on Monday I happened to have a BM5 B&O stereo ribbon to demo. We threw it on the drums in my home studio in M/S against the M-160 on Mid and BM5 channel 2 on Side.

The hypercardioid of the M-160 really sounded better to us on Mid than the BM5's inherent figure-8 on both channels. The BM5 has a nice round-ness but from 5 feet it just highlighted the fact we were in a basement. I have portable Tube Traps and built-in base traps but my studio never sounded so basement.

The Beyer's are darker but I'm starting to like that again about them.

+3....

get two 130s so you can do the blumlein for overheads (i use them with http://www.sabrasom.com.br/) suspension mounts with great results. Very good for strings and percussion too.

Bobby, where did you find an M130 for $575 CDN? I will be on that like stink on a monkey. Not Lie and Persuade cuz I don't think they are a Beyer dealer. Full Compass still has the cheapest prices in the US for those and 160's.

M130. I got mine NIB as an e-bay special. Hardly anyone bid. I paid $306 US for it. The guy appeared to be clearing out the entire Beyer line as he seemed to be offering one of each model. Goes great with the M160. Surprisingly tiny.
