I have read probably all the threads on GS about sax and I would like some extra input about this situation: I will be recording a rock/funk band in a loft type room. The ceilings are about 9 feet, room is 40 x 30. There are 2 sax in the band (usually tenor and alto or tenor and tenor). The band wants to record everything live (no headphones, like a show). The band is really loud (heavy drummer, loud distorted guitars, etc). I was thinking about using RE20 or 441. Do you have any suggestions? Ribbons would capture too much bleed I think and the sax players really scream in the mic (don't want a puff of air in the ribbon...). What are the difference in sound between the RE20 and 441? proximity effect? |

441 is best for that situation. Less bleed and a reduced proximity effect. RE20 is good too but 441 is best.

Yeah, +1 for some isolation! Use 703 and make your own panels. Then make sure they are placed well. Make guitar amp "boxes" with the 703. Trust me, it will help a lot. It wont be perfect, but you WILL notice a major difference. You must leave plenty of time to experiment. Don't let the band rush you through getting sounds. If they want to record this way, they have to deal with the fact that it might take you 30 minutes or so to get gobos and mics in the right places. *****Mic placement will be a MAJOR deal in this situation. Understand the pickup patterns well and use them to your advantage. The above mentioned mics are great and will sound good. If bleed is really an issue for you switch to a clip on style mic. The DPA 4099 is killer. That's my 2 cents....... Rob |

there is almost no wind from saxophone, and loudness of playing has not much to do with it. If you have hypercardioid ribbon it would be better than dynamic. With proper placement figure of 8 would be better too. In my experience ribbons on loud sources sounds better than dynamics. Use pop filter if you are really afraid and you are safe. I used Coles 4038 on trombone (which is probably the loudest brass instrument of all, not that saxophone is brass...) and it worked like a charm. Also trombone has only one sound hole and in theory it should have more wind, but I used it really close and without pop filter and nothing wrong happened. It was live situation with sax, heavy drummer and double/electric bass.
