Talking Live performance mics (headsets)?

A client of mine is planning on doing some live performances that will require a headset due to the amount of dancing. I would like to send her in the right direction re brands/models, but I have no experience with headset mics. If anyone can suggest some models to look into, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks,
D

I really like the DPA 4061 (omni) and 4088 (cardioid).
For corporate and theatrical boom mics, also check out the Coutryman E6 which is available in both of the above polar patterns.

Sennheiser and DPA make the best sounding lavs IMO. Check their websites for more info. Hope this helps.

Sennheiser ME 3 and Shure Beta 54 are both excellent. Stay away from omnis if you're dealing with a live music performance situation, feedback city.

I have both DPA 4066 and Countryman E6 headsets. The Countryman works great for spoken word (and is less visually obtrusive)... but not nearly as much fidelity with a singer as the DPA (and not nearly as secure if dancing is involved, without a lot of tape... I actually cut the pads from 1" J&J Flexible Fabric BandAids and use the resulting tape tabs just behind each actors' ear to great effect at theatrical events). If you can get them to test, then A/B and make your choice.

Unless wedges are in play, omnis work fine (with adequate EQ tuning, of course) and are less prone to ambient noise (hair, clothing, wind). If you choose a Countryman, be sure to test it both with and without the tiny plastic cap that might/might not be fitted over the element. They reduce the pattern... but also increase the HF lift, usually causing more HF feedback problems than they're worth. And, unless the element is below or close to the corner of the mouth, the foam pop filter isn't usually necessary, though it is quite ugly.

HTH.

Re: Live performance mics (headsets)?

The two to look at are the DPA and the Sennheiser.

I'd go for the beige DPA 4066 headsets and make sure you get the right adapter to fit whatever brand of wireless bodypack you are using. The body pack itself can be secured with some sort of sling / holster arrangement that are commercially available or wardrobe might make for you (and you can keep afterwards??!!)

If its kids the DPAs are available in smaller frame sizes - if you're not familiar, they are a bit like a pair of glasses backwards. The trouble is an adult version on its most retracted setting is still a bit swimmy on small heads.

I didn't look at your location but if you were in the UK I have eight channels of Sennheiser G3 with 4066s available for hire.
