Thanks so much...that is very helpful...One question about the Tascam...what is the advantage of a hard disk recorder like that over something older...I have a Yamaha aw16g that I used to use...i think they only record at 16 bit maybe? is that the biggest difference I would be looking at?

I would say that right this moment after taking everyones advice into consideration that I am strongly thinking of going for the beyer 930's , then I can save some money at first and maybe even use the extra cash for the dav preamp, then maybe I'd get a pair of 910s later as suggested or maybe something different if I am consistently pleased with the 930s..sound smart?

I think MC930 may be the most adaptable small capsule cardiod on the planet. It is very easy to use with success and you won't regret your purchase. I rarely see people selling them used. I use mine more than the Schoeps MK4s.

I am in a similar situation than you, and my goto rig is a pair of MC930 and a Fostex FR2LE.
Always usable results for a moderate price.
Saerch for my recent samples here. They are examples with this.

The QTCs are very good sounding mics, no question, and I have used them many times. They are expensive, high quality, but not without faults. I own EW, Schoeps , DPA, Sennheisers, Gefells- each has it's own place.

Those of us who love the EWs don't find an issue with the noise floor. I have several of the older pairs as well as QTCs and about 30% of the gig is about choosing a good mic for the room and then 70% is about placement IMO.

But given your budget, you have been given a LOT of good advice that allows you decent mics and preamps with what you have to spend- and it's up to you to decide what you want to do. Good luck, and if you want to use some EWs or Gefells, drop me a line.

thanks matthieu, but I should have been more specific in saying that I can't find matched pairs or the 910's.

I asked for matched pair of 910 to Beyer Europe. They don't have that in their catalog as for the 930, but they answered me that they can make them on demand.
MichaelPatrick seems to have some contacts with BeyerDyanmic-USA and could give us some informations ?

I just sent an email to Evan at BeyerDynamic.US (evan@beyerdynamic-usa.com) to see what he says about selling the MC910 in pairs. I'll report back when I hear from him.
