Anyone here have success using a Decca Tree on pipe organs? I am thinking it might be a "natural." I have heard "up high" and from 5 to 15 meters back. Anyone have any specifics? There was a Swedish engineer's thread but it was pretty dated. Thanks. D. Still looking for a tall stand or stands if anyone's selling. PM me, please.

I have always read that there was not any "standard" and that the Decca guys(the ones that were around to create Decca Tree) sort of laugh when they hear about folks using rigid "specs" I have had good success with using 2 pairs..one placed normally, and one back a bit into the hall faced backwards to capture the "ambience". I never use anything but Omnis on Pipe Organ as I have found the bass on other polar patterns to be too lean for this great instrument. This is a great reference as Mr. Eargle goes into great detail about the captures.. http://www.hbdirect.com/album_detail.php?pid=23648

Before experts find this... I feel you gain nothing with Decca 3 in this situation, just go for a stereo pair with a second one further away, omnis, cardioid's, 8, whatever depending of the situation. Decca 3 was and is an attempt to record a symphony orchestra in good controlled acoustics Matti |

I'm by no means an expert, but I've done a number of organ recordings. I think decca is useful, specially when using very wide AB mics or when doing surround obviously. For regular stereo a traditional AB is very fine in most instances, and the C mic can sometimes change the tonality of the recording too much so it's tricky during mixdown. Not so much with surround, I find. I think it's a case of electrical summing being different than acoustical summing. I think it's useful but right now not so much of an improvement as to merit the purchase of another 4006. |
