Question Mackie MDR fan noise

So I recently got this second-hand Mackie MDR recorder as a backup machine.
In a few test runs, I've found it to reliably record, too. And seemingly it doesn't get warm at all - even after 3 hrs of continuous recording my hand is still warmer. Fan blows out cool air.
Has anyone here modded that fan to go slower, or maybe even replaced it with a noiseless (and probably less efficient) cooling system? Mike Rivers seems to recommend a Zener diode mod (Mackie Forums Home: Fan upgrade for Hdr, is it doeable, is it worth doing?) - anyone done that?

I do not know if this is possible on a Mackie MDR, but I was able to reduce the fan noise significantly on my Fostex D824 by decoupling the fan from the chassis with these cheap little rubber plugs for computer fans. I also added a switch to shut down the fan completely (it is almost never necessary to cool the recorder or the HD).
