Question Really big windscreens...

I've been putting off purchasing some of the larger ribbon mics and some larger LDC mics because I do a lot of outdoor work during the summer recording season. For the outdoor stuff, big windscreens are an absolute necessity on everything (sometimes even omnis need them).

One of the mics on my radar that I really like and want to purchase is an AEA R84 (or two or three). However, I have not seen any screens remotely big enough for one of those mics. The big Neumann screens like the WS87 get close, but aren't big enough.

Anybody out there in Remotesville have an idea on how to deal with this? By big, I mean like the big Shure A81WS screens.

Rycote baskets? Bit expensive, though.

I would guess the only option is a custom Rycote.

They can be very helpful if you ring them direct in the UK.

(I have asked the question of Rycote for you - see below)

What is the diameter of the main body of the mic.?

If it's 55mm or less, then it could fit in a Rycote.

I have asked Rycote the question and it looks a possibility - just need to know the diameter excluding the mount to confirm.

Do you (or anyone) know?

Thumbs up

Just had a reply from Rycote (I told you they were good ).

Looks like it may be possible - they will look into it tomorrow (it's nearly 7pm in the UK, so a reply from the MD at this time in the evening is excellent service).

Ben- We can make something happen I believe. Wes had some furries made that wrap around. I did an outdoor recording of the UCLA marching band in one of their big windy fields and they seemed to work well. You would want to talk to him about getting them, or how he got them. I believe Rycote made them for us.

Thanks Paul. I work outdoors quite a bit during the summer- in some venues that get quite breezy.

The big gig that's outside is the Ojai Festival and I'd like to eventually be able to get some to use out there. But anything that is on stage also needs to look relatively clean. I have a Rycote furry (one of them with foam in it) for my SF-24 and it works pretty well.

On the flip side, there are things that I do elsewhere where all mics need to be able to deal with at least a 10 mph breeze.

I'll give you a ring when I get a moment.

Ben, I don't know if they would work or if the company would be inclined to to a custom mount/windscreen, but check out Cinela. I have some of their smaller mounts. To date they are to my ears are the quietest. I know you are not after mounts, however their windscreens might be as good. I had one of the DPA "blimp" looking mounts and windscreen, thinking it might be a nice replacement for some of my Rycotes. The reason being is the screen compresses flat. It didn't hold up in moderate to high winds. So back to the Rycotes.
