Well-- it certainly SOUNDS like a fact: What is a "Gearslutz Fact?"

This is rather embarrassing to say, but it was a long time ago and I don't really remember exactly what the problem was. Fortunately, I was running a Pro Tools backup at the time, so it was no big deal - I think I just used the Pro Tools session instead - but it could have been a problem if I was simply running two ADAT's.

YMMV
If I recall HD242Tools let's you split them so they won't be over big for the computer filesystem. If you don't split them some computers will choke. Not saying that's what happened to you, just saying to help the OP a bit.

No not really, I said I personally don't trust em..
Stating a fact would be: "Don't use external drives! They're unreliabe!"

This is based on the one time I recorded 64 tracks straight to external USB drive, The PC had problems writing these files to external (Errors and what not)
so because of this I personally don't trust them and will not use them for anything other than copying to..

Esata is certainly fast enough, but I still always record to internal drive and copy to external after the show, this way I keep a backup copy on both main and redundant machine..

I will do whatever I feel is necessary to keep my multitrack operation as close to 100% reliable as possible..

X-48 ... runtime errors ...

hello .. 4 days of recording 2 to 3 hour blocks last week recording 24/48 PT locked to TC and BB from video / X-48 backup running either wild or Jamsync'd to TC from video but on internal sync

48 tracks PT rig as main - only stopped accepting input once ... did not like to be stopped and started .. we would have to Stop / wait for 3 hours of Overviews to be drawn - nearly 15 minutes or longer in some cases ... we never had time in-between acts and interviews to stop and draw overviews ... so roll on it went ..

the X-48 backup machine had 1 runtime error while recording / 1 runtime error while backing up to external USB drive and 1 recording buffer full error while recording ...

PT stopped accepting input - we restarted it and no less than 2 minutes later the X-48 backup had the recording buffer error ... close call ...

I thought the we had reached some File Size Limit or something but 3 hours seems well within reason after reading as many posts as i could find here

ah - live recording can be so unpredictable, even with good preparations ... good rental Gear did not help this show either ...

cheers

john

At least on my system (older PT 6.7 HD2 Accel) you can stop the waveform draw without penalty. It will finish redraw the next time you open the session.

What he said! USB and Firewire are fine for small track counts, but get over 32 tracks of 1fs and they are spotty. I've found certain USB drive/controller combinations that will work OK, but there is still no replacing a good internal SATA drive on a dedicated controller. Even the eSATA ports need to be watched as they often share resources with the USB ports. I have a laptop that if I plug my dongle into the wrong USB port, the eSATA goes down the toilet.
That said, we use drives connected to the motherboard controllers exclusively.
As always, YMMV.

All the best,
-mark

Yep.

Whatever else may be said about the HD24, I just gotta say that for me its been THE most reliable recording device of any type that I have ever used.

I wish I could say the same. Mine was terribly fussy about exactly what hard drive it would talk to. I never found any drive > 32GB that it would even acknowledge. And then it died in transit back from Romania a couple years ago.

I have replaced it with a JoeCo BBR1. The BBR1 is also picky about what drives it will talk to, but it isn't hard wired for obsolete IDE drives like HD24.
