Question How much snake for remote?

I'm getting calls to do community college jazz and choral ensemble recital recording. How much snake do I need for this kind of work? Do you try to set up far enough away from the performance so that you are not hearing "live" music when you try to set up? How long a snake and what configuration do you find useful?

Do must of you carry monitor speakers or use phones to judge your mic'ing?

Usually 100' will cover you in almost all but the largest concert halls. If I have to hang mics in a large hall, sometimes I go as long as 150'. As far as phones vs. monitors, I never am able to setup in a place where monitors are practical, a good pair of closed back headphones are important. Better are a pair of semi-directional headphones like Ultrasone or Yamaha with "S-Logic".

I think 100' will be enough so that you can at least "make do" with where you need to setup your gear. You can never have too much, and if you're using multipins you can always add length very easily. As far as monitoring goes, if you're not building a mix then headphones are the way to go. This will let you check the general sound of a channel(s) and for troubleshooting lines. I wouldn't recommend trying to mix on them, though, but you may need more than 100' of cabling in order to get enough isolation for monitors to do any good.

100' has always been plenty for me.
