Thanks Steve

Can you tell me how much bleed from drums, trp or piano is there in DPA 4021 or 4099 mounted on the bass on a small stage like this ?

How do you manage all the phase issues with all this bass mics + pickup , this could be major PITA ? Every time when I use pickup/DI and two mics ( km 184 mostly ) I have to time align the pickup in order to avoid phase problems .....

I see you have 2 mics on the BD, it seems like audix and one beyerdynamic M160 or is it sure 58 ? Whats the purpose of that ?

Thanks one more time Steve !

There's plenty of bleed from those mics I'm afraid.
The DPA 4099 did better on the leakage front, but (IMO) the 4021 sounded better to me.

I manage the phase issues just like you do.
Time alignment is your friend.

I had a beyerdynamic M88 on the bass drum.
The other mic was used in the house.
We didn't want to change the live sound settings, so we doubled mic'd where we could.

I used my M160s for drum overheads.

hey Steve, given what you learned with 102 vs 103 on drum OH, would you ever try the 102 in your "out of inputs and only one mic for the kit" placed in slightly over the kick drum off the right knee??

thanks as always for sharing your knowledge and pics and helping complete the equation: great music and musicians + great engineer with great gear = success!

Great thread, good tech update, and wonderful to see a NY club that is small, crowded, tiny stage and NO AMPS! Acoustic jazz; yes! thumbsup

Yes, it is the CD titled 'balloons.'

True Systems Precision8 mic pres into Tascam X48 recorders at 24 bit / 48K.
The tracks were then transferred and mixed on Pro Tools.

I recorded and engineered the project aboard The Bread Mobile.
Jon D'Uva and I mixed the record.

I believe the full credits are included in the liner notes.

I recorded and engineered Omar Sosa's Across the Divide.

Jon mixed this album and did some additional engineering during overdubs.
FYI, this was a live capture that turned into a studio record.

Once I revisited the tracks while mixing we did notice more hat than I would normally except for a snare mic...

It wasn't as much as the hat being so loud as it was a lot brighter than the snare.
I dug how the snare sounded, but not with that bright hat sound on top of it.

I went back to using the TLM103 with the addition of my old secret weapon, an MD431 on our next jazz date!

Interesting. What will the TLM102 be your "go to" for?
Do you use a condenser mic on snare just for jazz?

I've been using condensers on snare on all sorts of music styles for a longtime now.

It usually was in combination with a dynamic until I started using the TLM103.
I have taped a KM84 on top of a SM57 for snare on a regular basis back in the day.

That said, I did use a TLM103 with a MD431 (yes, the vocal mic) on Joey Baron's snare over the weekend.
I love the sound of the MD431 on snare and combining it with the TLM103 is a great match.

The TLM102 sounds good on horns.

great thread, thanks for sharing this valuable info. I didn't see what mics you used on piano? (Hope I didn't miss it) Or what the setup was...spaced pair/AB/XY etc.?

Again, great stuff and congrats on such a great live sound recording

is that the original 431 Steve? Or the MK.II version?

The original has the silver basket and the switch on a removable pod on top - called "Profipower".

The MK.II was all black with a polymer body.

I still have the original in my kit, purchased in the late 1970's I think. I removed the switch pod from mine, though.

John

I normally use C414TLIIs or DC96Bs for piano on these Blue Note recordings, but this time around we used what the club has installed...

We had a pair DPA4021s for PNO LO & PNO HI
The club also had a SM57 in the hole which we also grab since it was there.

Yes, it was the original MD431 and not the MKII.

I have a few of those mics; I also removed the reed (Profipower) switches, but have kept them handy if and when we need to use them as a (on/off) switchable vocal or talkback mic.
