Good question. I have an "old-style" H4 and I was wondering the same thing.

Let's see....

I just got one tonight. VERY NICE unit! But, I only wish it had one extra feature: S/Pdif Coaxial and/or Toslink. Would I be crazy to think of doing such a mod? I want to use my Core Sound Mic2496 as mic pre-amp/ADC (it only sends out either coax/toslink s/pdif.) The H4n sounds good, but the Mic2496 just has that little extra. - Mike

My guess would be that it's components are far too small, and because it's mostly a digital machine there's not much to be done. You might be able to mod the analog parts, but you'll be working in a very tight space. Probably unlikely to find people willing to work under those conditions.

Haven't we gotten to the point where you could shrink the whole mod crew down to microscopic size, and send them into the H4n in a submarine?

They're working on it.

You can't mod something that doesn't work. If they needed a submarine, you'd be SOL...
