Hey guys! I'm doing a gig tomorrow. I might could use some moral support, or ideas. My jaz band, The Capital Jazz Project is being supplemented by another jazz group, The Dave Brubeck Fellows -- young titans who were hand selected to attend the Brubeck Institute, basically because they've demonstrated they're straight up geniuses, - and a 18 piece string orchestra. We all wrote the arrangements. I contributed one! Unfortunately we won't have a lot of time to trial run. I'm doing multi-track. Don't even try and talk to me about doing a stereo X/Y, ORTF stuff. We always record our gigs multitrack and we're loving it. Problem is, of course, the strings. We've done this twice before, on different shows. This s a bit more ambitious. Plus the last time we did it was a couple of years ago and I've already forgotten. Yes, I have my notes! For one thing my gear has upgraded. The strings are: 4 1st Violins, 4 2nd Violins, 4 Violas, 4 cellos, 2 basses. I'm hoping to mic each section stereo, probably X/Y? But I had another thought. And this really is my question. Sorry to take so long: I'd like to mic the 4 cellos, with two mics but in fig 8. They're Peluso 2247 and 2247LE. The mics would have to go between the cellos, not the best placement. Has anyone ever done this successfully? The mic would reject the violas, band and other strings in front, but they'd mainly get the wood rather than the strings. Feasible? I'm using the Metric Halo ULN-8s and a ULN-2 for 26 tracks.

Man, I'm coming in seriously late on this. I wish I saw this when you first posted the thread. In any event, how did your gig workout and what did you end up doing?

Thread Starter | Remote tomorrow with jazz band and strings -- fig 8 Question
Steve! I swear I thought there were more replies to this! Gig turned out great, I think. I haven't mixed it yet, so I still need to find out for sure. I didn't do the fig8 to catch multiple instruments with one mic thing. |
