Question Pelican 1510 carry on for mics - checking safe?

heellooo. hoping to enable myself to fly with nice condenser mics on a plane via a Pelican 1510. ive heard many say that even though its spec'd to FAA standards, sometimes its required that it be gate checked. anyone feel confident that mics are safe from the elements, pressure, and temperature in one of these?

Pelican 1510 Carry On Case

thanks!

Pelican 1510 Carry On Case

I would think if it's an appropriate size for carryon, all but the tiny regional jets would allow it inside. And, with the mics in ziplock bags (against moisture/humidity changes) my only fear would be sheer shock... like when (if it must be checked) the baggage gorilla tosses it 15 feet from the conveyor to the cart, and the other gorilla misses the pass... foam's good, but I don't know I'd trust it with the mass of a big LDC in that situation. I'd strenuously (though gently) insist that the cargo is precious, valuable and could they find a space inside?

I'll be flying to Europe next week with a small rig (Apogee Ensemble, Mac Book Pro, hard drive, a couple of stands and a 2-camera video rig) and the mics (2x each Gefell M296, Sennheiser MKH8040 and DPA4061) will definitely be in my "personal item" backpack with the MBP and hard drive. I'll carry one video camera and allow the other one to be gate checked from BNA to LGA on the tinyjet. I know that's not LDCs, but it's how I'd work it.

When I travel I simply put the SDCs in Schoeps plastic tubes (or similar) and put them in my briefcase. They are easily visible on the Xray and visual scan and I have no problems keeping a briefcase with me. You can get MANY mics in a briefcase!

The last time I flew (2 weeks ago) the only item to draw attention was a small plastic case with 2 small SATA drives, cable, PS and express34 card. They asked about it-- I explained-- end of story. And this was at O'Hare.

Yes I use similar items (plastic tubes) with my mics too, see associated thread for pictures: Mic storage for mobile recordists? .... some useful pics also on this thread page.

Hello,
One note - the US airlines specifically state they will not reimburse you for damage to any electronic equipment that's checked.

Although many airlines will if you fight had enough and if you tried to cary it on. A friend had a bunch of pres destroyed by an airline when he carried them on and he was forced to check it. The airline claimed it would be a "one time" payment and not to expect it again. It was pretty obvious, though, that the airline was at fault.

It can get like -30 deg F and below in the cargo hold. Don't check your mics, always carry on.

What is your source? My research shows that cargo holds (where pets can travel) stays between 45 and 80 degrees F. Much more likely to be hotter or colder when you (and your mics) step off the plane.

Atmospheric pressure stays the same as the cabin-- sea level (MSL) to 8,000ft MSL. Shouldn't be a problem if you stay conscious.
