Talking Young cellist - Ginastera's Pampeana - sample

Last weekend I recorded a young artist concert at the historic Elsinore Theater here in Salem, Oregon. A high school cellist played a piece i had never heard before which i thought was quite cool - Pampeana No. 2 by Ginastera - and i thought i would share it wit youse guys.

ORTF km140s blended with flanking DPA 4061s - stage lip, about 15 feet out and 12 feet up. no eq or other processing- just the straight recording.

thank you for posting!!!

what a unique piece. I quite liked the tone of your recording.
What is your signal chain?
Cable brand, micpres, ADDA, recorder?

Sounds great.

phase - my remote kit for that recording was the 4 mics mentioned running into a lexicon U42s interface with dbx preamps and lexicon conversion, into an IBM thinkpad T61 running Reaper. there was no post processing other than a simple blending of the ORTF pair with the omni pair.

thank you for the note.
That is very impressive.
I'm going to check out the U42s and Reaper.
Currently using Samplitude.

Do you remember which mic cables you used?
I am changing my cable collection. After testing various brands and types of cable, I find I can dramatically change the sound. I would like to evaluate the cable brand/type you had for the recording.

thank you for the info!

cables were a pair of canare star quad with neutrik, and a pair of audio magic with neutrik. the audio magic are nice and heavy duty, but are a bit stiff. the canare are just about perfect.

Hi, J sounds nice. I just wanted to let you know the beyer mc930 you sold me were a defective pair. I git them replaced and everything is great..... Just wanted you to know, if you thought they sounded good then, you may want to take another listen. The problem was slight, however the smallest imperfection (especially in a stereo pair) can throw off everything.

Very nice sound, just the right distance and amount of room sound. The cellist has a very good vibrato, tone, and sense of drama. The intonation will come.

Q to cellist in Singapore Orchestra: How do you play with perfect intonation?

A: Practice for twenty years.

the only thing I was missing was a little more "wood" or "grab" on the strings, (for example in some recordings the bowing sort of hits you in the chest..really woody/earthy/present) and was a touch too distant, but thanks for posting, JNorman, you obviously know what you are doing.

Hi, installed Reaper and recreated a project I set up in Samplitude and Nuendo 4. WOW, what a difference in tone, air/space. Quite like it.

thank you for the details.

teddy - correcto. this was one of those situations where my goals were in conflict with the house sound guys. too typical - the sound reinforcement guys are hired by the sponsors, and i was hired directly by the musicians. the house sound guys think they get priority over everything and keep trying to tell me where i cant put my mics. i wind up having to work off center and too far away.

however, the guy who was hired to do the video came and asked to use my audio so he wouldnt have to use a pull from the board - ha!

Hi, thought I would chime in again to clear anything up. I have no problem with Mr Norman. The issue was something he was not aware of. It took extremely critical listening to decipher something was wrong with one of the mics.... I sincerely wrote to tell him he should give them another shot, I much prefer them to the Nuemann's I sold Mr, Norman.

btw- when I had contacted him about the problem, he responded right away. And it was with his help that I got a brand new pair...... Also, if someone sold me broken stuff I most certainly would spread the word on a public forum, and trust me that would be the least of your problem. I have no problem going across the country to show up at your door

For me, there is a problem of phase in your recording jnormann.
Is it between the 140 and the DPA ?
It would be interesting to have the KM140 alone.
