Talking A pair of r84's for a pair of live horns

I have a gig with a sax and trumpet up front. I want to be able to more or less sum them without bad effect. One idea was simply one in front of each horn, slightly off the bell, each angled so that that I null the other horn. (They stand a few feet apart). Then i realized that with a distance of a few feet, I might get a bad phase cancellation (a few feet back, they will bleed regardless of null orientation). So the next idea was to put them next to each other in like an XY in front of the pair.

I want to be able to place them in the stereo field correctly, which means I won't be able to hard pan them. Will the XY idea work well with a pair of Fig 8's?

if I go close - like a foot, I think the players will move around too much and the sounds will drift too much as a result. Thoughts?

Maybe a pair of DPA 4099s, one clipped to each individual instrument, as well as the ribbons for a choice...? Close-in paired with cardioid would yield a fairly isolated signal...

Use good quality Cardioid's, ribbons are (IMHO) too fragile for live work. I've used everything from Schoeps, AKG, Neumann's to SM57's and 58's for live brass and never encountered phase issues that were a problem from the live recording.
