Question I need a direct answer on the technical aspects of splitting a mic to two channels!

Please note:
baze sax did not start this thread. I moved it from another thread due to the fact that I felt it was not on point with the original thread topic. Here's a new thread to directly address the poster's issues and concerns. Remoteness

Hi, I am trying to find direct answer on forums about technical aspects of splitting mic signal to two channels in one mixer. I have recieved few general answers. what are the disadvantages and possible problems. what is the safe way in terms of signal integrity, phase ground, impedance, etc. I want to experiment with this live, so I want to skip the tryal&error stage. should I use y cable or go with a splitter. can smb help?thanks, billy.

Billy, Billy, Billy, I'll say it again (like I did in another thread), using a Wye cord to patch a mic into two channels of the same mixer is a no-brainer.

Folks do this all the time.

There is no signal integrity issues; phase ground problems to speak of.
And, your impedance concerns should not be a problem, especially if you're using a wireless mic system like you mentioned in that other thread.

Um, if you want to experiment perhaps skipping trial and error isn't the way to go...
Perhaps utilise a rehearsal and take advantage of trial and error would be the perfect way to to answer your own questions.

I agree with Steve -The concept of which you speak shouldn't be mind blowing - Its not like you're dealing with rocket appliances or anything

with regards to your question, certain types of splitters are just racked up multiple y-splits anyway. - click on the splitter tag at the top of the Remote possibilities forum page and you should be set on a path to find all the information you require plus so much more.

Steve has obviously invested a lot of time in making accessing what you seek easily available, I'm sure he appreciates people utilising the features his forum offers. I sure appreciate the features.

Y splitters are used all the time. The reason I see most often is to allow the vocals to be compressed and\or FX added to the house while a dry signal is sent to the monitors.
The addition of a band pass compressed signal is much more likely to cause a phase issue than a simple splitter.

Even though you have a nice condenser mic your problem may be easily corrected by using a mic with a Beta or SM 58 capsule which is designed to provide for a vocal that cuts through the mix.

I do this all the time, with Y cables. Usually for vocals when I'm doing monitors from FOH for uncompressed send to monitors, as mentioned already by mixedupsteve

Also split the double bass in another band I work with - the band often like the double bass EQ'ed in the foldback in a way that doesnt suit me out front.

If using a dig. console its a simple matter of changing routing - an 'internal' Y split.

Have run into no problems , except for remembering to get my Y cables out of the dog box at the end of the night ... writing on my hand with sharpie seems to work...takes 3 showers to wash sharpie off...

Piece of gaff tape over the face of your watch. Works like a charm and comes right off!
