Talking What's the best portable stereo recording device for off the board recording(live)?

Any suggestions? Was looking at what Zoom(H2) has to offer.

Kind of depends on your budget, if nothing else.

The H2 has a problem with recording from external devices as its line input is over-sensitive. So the external source level has to be reduced a bit to avoid distortion.

Maybe look a the Sony M10 for a nicely constructed compact recorder.

For handling higher up to +24 dBu line levels off pro boards you have several low cost choices. Edirol R-09/09HR, Sony PCM-D50/M10 and tested Olympus LS-10, and likely same for newer LS-11 line inputs work fine.

None of the Zoom products, Marantz, Korg, and some others have enough headroom to safely qualify for board feeds without attenuation networks.

Of course all Sound Devices decks are great, and have balanced line inputs if ths matters, but cost is often over budget.

My site has reviews, and discusstion tech links for deck models at: Sonic Studios Live Ambient Stereo-Surround Recording/Playback Tips Page

I have been recording off the board with an H2 Zoom unit. There is an audio input adjustment that keeps the signal at a reasonable level.

Haven't had a problem with getting a clean recording.

Hi, I was wondering if there are any devices like this that can record multi-track from the AUX output on the desk to be mixed later?

Thanks

There are a bunch of multitrack hard disk recorders that can take individual channel recording off an Aux or off the insert jack of a mixer. Zoom, Tascam, Akai, Fostex, Alesis, Roland, Boss, etc.

Just do a search for stand alone recorders.

Well - the best is a Sound Devices 702 or a Nagra LB.

At the budget end, a Fostex FR-2LE, maybe.

If you want a pocketable machine, the Edirol R-09HR, Zoom H4N, or Olympus LS-11 or LS-5 (the LS-5 is the same quality as the LS-11, but it has less internal memory and comes without the remote and case to keep the price under £200 in the UK)

The H2 is almost the worst, rather than the best.
