Talking Pipe organ recording again!! --video--

Here is a pipe organ recording I did yesterday, I wonder what you think about the sound etc. ...

What I used for microphones and equipment, it is my little secret for a while.

But it's probably not what you might expect you!

Fun, fun fun Janne!
I'll listen to them as soon as I have decent monitoring. I expect the usual excellence

Wonderfull

That was fantastic, really a great piece - so I'm really keen to know the details of how/where you recorded this. Thanks for sharing, it made my morning. And possibly intimidated my kids e

Very nice sounding organ recording. Actually sounds pretty much identical to my own using precision matched pressure omni mics on HRTF baffle. Very small mics with 5-40,000 cycle bandwidth and use HRTF type baffling to get stereo-surround imaging. Likely same as you've used, but of course just a guess.

I have about three dozen pipe organ recordings (and all sorts of other type music) done in manner described on page: Sonic Studios MP3 Page 2 with Ambient Stereo-Surround Session and Live Performance Recordings

Sounds nice.

Are you doing something with L-R track delays? Seems like the right channel has more of the direct sound with the left picking up more reverberation.

Binaural Pipe Organ - Recoring Made in Church (KU-100)

Here is a short excerpt of a pipe organ recording that I made last year.

The church is a large stone and wooden floor type church, maybe 80 feet across and 160 feet deep - maybe more.

Anyway, this recording was made at the front of the church, with the KU 100 binaural mannequin mic located just in back of the altar proper, pretty much on center line with the church. If I were guessing, I would say that the mannequin head was about 10 feet, maybe 15 feet back from the center of the smaller pipes. In essence, though the church is arguably leaning towards diffuse field conditions, the mannequin head was as close to a 'direct' field as possible.

As for what seems like 'hiss' (i.e. due to levels being set too low during recording) in the recording, this is not the case. It turns out that particular organ has a very noisy bypass air system, and that's just the way it is.

Anyway, I hope that you will like this excerpt. It is binaural, again, made using a Neumann type KU 100 mannequin head. As such, headphones are required to best convey the spatial aspects of the recording.

Here's hoping that you enjoy this (brief) excerpt. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the compliment - I sincerely appreciate it.

I'm not sure if I have properly pasted the link (below), but I have posted a few other binaural samples in various forums on this site. This one (below) is definitely about as different (acoustically, and otherwise) from that mini-cathedral as is possible. The clip featured is a jazz excerpt, and the decay time here is extremely short (the mp3 in question is in my post entitled "Make a Jazz Noise Here"):

What is your favorite binaural recording?

As with the pipe organ, this binaural recording was made with a Neumann type KU 100, only in this instance the mannequin head was facing the stage (and rather close to the stage).

Grab your headphones and have a listen. Here's hoping that you like it.

I have a pair of DPA 4003 as main mic, and 2 sE 4400a on a short small beam, 10cm, in Figure of 8, about exactly 5 m behind the main pickups.

Then I run everything through a Steinberg (Yamaha) MR816 X and cubase5.

The Steinberg (Yamaha) MR816 X, is some fine little thing
But Steinberg's drivers for MR816 X, are some bad work

Here is the recordings, made with the setup:

How well does this method (with closely spaced 8's) work with regard to stereowidth and bass decorrelation? I've used something similar with choirs before with some success (actually in the same church - LuleƄ Cathedral - small world!)

I haven't had the opportunity to listen to your recordings yet, but I'd also like to hear how you work with the main pair nowadays. I usually bring a very tall mic stand and a 1m stereo bar for my 4006-TLs, do you still rig your mics from the balcony of the organ?
